I remember when I was first looking into the Psych fandom. I was like, this has to be overflowing with Shawn/Gus... I mean just listen to them fight like a married couple. And then there was an overwhelming amount of Shawn/Lassie and I was like... "where did this come from?"

DUDE THIS I WAS THINKING EVERY WORD OF THIS.

Especially because the fandom I came to "Psych" from was "Due South." (Long story, friends trading shows, not important.) So I went from a fandom where EVERYBODY 'ships the long-term best friends to one where everybody prefers the hate 'ship instead, and I can't see any reason for it. And my fandom directly after "Psych" was "Community," and it may be the only fandom in the freaking WORLD where the het 'ships are more popular than the slash 'ships 'cause there's only one attractive major white guy. (Troy/Abed isn't the most popular 'ship in the world? This does not compute.)

I don't think anyone's doing it on purpose but it's an awfully big coincidence that all the hate 'shippers are in "Psych" fandom and all the BFF 'shippers are in fandoms like "House." ETA: Especially because you would think that someone would tell their BFF 'shipping friends, "...you have to see this, it will hit every kink you never knew you had."

Troy/Abed isn't the most popular 'ship in the world?

I was actually shocked by how unpopular this ship was :C

I haven't looked closely at the Community fandom because of all the shipping wars, but is Troy/Abed at least the most popular slash pairing? From what I've seen, Community skews pretty heavily towards het, or at least pairings involving Annie or Jeff.

Judging from AO3, which is where I get my Troy/Abed fix, it's got to be the most popular slash pairing. But, as I also enjoy reading Jeff/Annie (Jeff/anybody, tbh) I was particularly disappointed to find little love for this pairing, even as a side-ship, in that branch of fandom.

Community has so many plausible ships it just makes me sad.

It's more or less the only slash ship (there is a little Britta/Annie femslash, too, but almost no other guy/guy).

I am constantly surprised T/A isn't bigger, but OTOH every sitcom fandom I've been in skews heavily het, so it bothers me less than it would in a drama fandom (though as a major OTPer it makes me very sad).

The lack of Troy/Abed is a good point, but I don't think House/Wilson is a good example of a BFF ship. Technically, they're friends, but they have so much in the way of drama, arguments and serious rifts that they almost fit the rival dynamic. Gus and Shawn may bicker, but Gus has yet to seriously lose it with Shawn, and he never really works against him the way Wilson sometimes does against House.

I think when looking at popular pairings, the popularity often does depend on the amount of conflict, but that's not always so simple as dividing it into friendshipping or rivalshipping.
