There are similarities but the situation is NOT the same and THAT'S why Erik is on the wrong side of the moral grey area.

Well yeah. You're right here, but it's Charles' ill timed comment about them following orders that tips the scales in Magneto going, "Never again." If he'd said what you said, the tune might have been different.

Can I say, that scene was so well played. You actually saw Erik move from wavering to features set in grim resolve when Charles said that. Excellent portrayal by Fassbender, there. When I saw that, I was like, dayjm.

I agree about it being Charles' remark that tipped the scale, but what bothers me is that in some quarters Erik's comparison of the Americans/Russians to the Nazis isn't actually getting questioned. The problem isn't just that Erik and Charles disagree about how to handle the situation, but that Erik is too damaged to see that the situations aren't identical.

Yeah, it seems like one of the many tragic things is that everything is balanced so precariously and Charles' bad choices of words is easily enough to tip the balance. And his bad choice of words goes right to the heart of why he's inadequate to convince Erik. He's too far removed from this kind of experience to instinctively choose different words even if it fits the situation. While Erik is too personally close to the Holocaust to be able to hear that phrase with any other meaning.

Charles meant "they haven't had a chance to make a choice for themselves" and Erik heard "Even those who don't hate us yet will join others in killing us."
