It's really nice of you to show support, but I kind of want to point out that it's not the same at all. New York is often portrayed as the heart of the USA, it's what foreigners often think of if they think of the country - whereas the North in England is often mocked/mis- or under-represented in the media/ignored.

I didn't say it was... You're partially right and partially wrong. New York City and the rest of New York state are very different. I'm from the city, but I've lived in upstate as well, and it's sort of a sad place, because all the industry has gone away and all the small towns have been dying a slow economic death for a long time now. It's not called the Rust Belt for nothing. And in previous times upstate NY, along with Vermont, was one of the sources of the "Yankee hillbilly" stereotype. People in the city sort of frown a bit when they're reminded upstate exists.

(On the other hand, we do have apples. Lots and lots of apples. I think New York produces more apples than everyone in the entire state could eat.)

And New York is not 'the heart of the USA', in any way shape or form, no matter how much people claimed to identify with us after 9/11. We're considered damn dirty liberals, hardly better than California, LOL (despite the fact that much of upstate is conservative).

OH I JUST REMEMBERED. If you really want to read something good about the North of England, read "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" by Susanna Clarke. I love that book. It is the only book I know where the footnotes are longer than the chapters and where the magic actually makes sense.

Not buying it.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... I'm actually *from* Upstate New York rather than having just *lived* there (like, North Country, almost-might-as-well-be-Canada Upstate) and I've been to the North of England and have friends there and yeah, no. Totally not the same. Upstate New York is in very rough shape and is very, very different from New York City, but it's still not the same.

This and the comment above exactly, I'm from upstate NY, lived there my whole life and we're so different from NYC we might as well be a different state.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you really missed the point of what they were trying to say, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You aren't so different you're Nothern England, however.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell? Are you bloody serious? Do you even know what you're saying any more?

[identity profile] fullofowls.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
OKAY since my attempt to explain to the above anon that New York City =/= the rest of New York state has apparently caused a disproportionate amount of rage, I will leave off the subject.

this is what I get for posting at 3AM in the morning i suppose

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason it might feel disproportionate is because lots of non-Americans on the Internet are treated day-in, day-out to the attitude of the USA being the default, and all situations in the rest of the world have easily-applied equivalents in the USA. They don't, and it is annoying when Americans are constantly implying that it is. :)

I understand that you probably didn't consciously think this, but it is something to think about in the future, maybe? :)

[identity profile] fullofowls.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
ah now that I look at it I can see how my second comment about upstate NY makes it look like I was insisting it's the same as northern England. which i didn't intend (only to point out the big difference between the city and the rest of the state). but too late now i guess.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that is what people were thinking you meant. :) The discussion was about the North of England, which is often ignored even in England's national press, so an American coming in to make it about America was seen as the same old stuff! Still, live and learn.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
NYC may not be considered the hear of the US but you're pretty far off on everything else. Can't really compare regions like that, they're very different!

Also, what's your deal with apples? I'm from the city too, but the thing I harp on when I talk about upstate is the dairy/beef industry. You can get buffalo meat here!
