Sorry, but it doesn't make sense to me that you could write something you wouldn't enjoy reading yourself.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP could enjoy reading/writing their own het and femmeslash and dislike reading other people's.

I'm the same with slash.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose. The secret read more like "none at all" than "other people's" to me. But I see how it could go either way now.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I write lots of pairings I don't really like, usually because people requested it of me. Sometimes the pairing eventually grows on me. But sometimes I don't even go back and read my own fic because I really just don't like the pairing.

One of my most popular stories on ff.net (I'm speaking on a really small scale here) is a pairing I can't stand that I wrote for a request. I didn't hate writing it, and I did put my best effort into the fic. And I'm glad people like it. But I never read the pairing or look at art for it, because it annoys me like anything.

Seriously?

Are you a writer at all?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I am, and have been for years. It would bore me to death to write something I wasn't interested in, and I'd never be able to finish.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Have you never fulfilled a prompt for a challenge, or written something you don't like in order to challenge yourself? I can point to several things I've produced that involve characters in a way I don't read, or read much.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I've never done this, and I don't know why I would. It would bore me terribly, and the resulting story wouldn't be any good, because I'd have no real interest in the content.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Only you know what works on your own brain. But my question doubles as my answer - some writers do that, so that's how they can end up producing something they wouldn't necessarily read if somebody else had written it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoy writing slash/femmslash/het, but I just don't enjoy reading it. Maybe I'm weird, but I like that. That's kind of the point of the secret, that I enjoy writing all three, but I only enjoy reading slash 95% of the time.

[identity profile] silver-coins.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, anon.

Well, I prefer Gen above all things but I'll read slash too. I like writing femme-slash and het but I very rarely read others stories for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I am the same, OP. I like writing everything and I get plotbunnies for all sort of stories, but I only actively seek slash *shrugs*

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm well, I think many of us do it in different permutations. I write a good share of gen but it's easier for me to click on a shippy fic than a gen one when they are written by someone else. I guess the stories you need to get out of your system != those you need to get in?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty much the same except I don't write het at all.

[identity profile] afullmargin.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. :) I'm actually the entire opposite, I love reading any sort - but typically only enjoy writing slash.

[identity profile] casenumber825.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of the same, except I don't really read or write femslash or het (I have on the rare occasion when I've taken a fancy to a particular plotline)
Granted I don't write an awful lot at all, I just don't have the time....but I'll mostly read and be extremely interested in slash pairings

However, I enjoy watching and shipping anything, but I won't go any further than watching fanvids or being extremely please when two characters get together/wishing two characters will get together....

I dunno, I'm odd like that XD

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same. I'm really picky about how women are written in porn fic and how the female body is described and some common tropes in fanfic are instant wet blankets on my sex drive, so I basically never read het or femslash but I enjoy writing it.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes, this. With a side helping of "generic heteronormative romance is an instant wet blanket on my emotional investment," so even outside of porn I can get super-picky about reading het fic. It's sort of a double-whammy of it being way easier to slide into generic tropes with het, and of those tropes hitting my DNW buttons way harder than lazy or generic slash.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I see no problem with this.

Same here. IDK Y that is at all.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Who fucking cares? Why is this even a secret?
