IMO, the "in my eyes" is unnecessary. It is fanfic. But than again I think everything's fanfic (even though I don't write or read any of it)...

[identity profile] eiremauve.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, those books are in fact authorized fanfiction. :) They're longer than most, though, obviously.

ME TOO!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if they're actually fans of the shows they write about.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Some are, but most aren't. For most it's just a way to turn a quick buck.

The Doctor Who authors are usually associated with the show in some way--script editors or things like that, as far as I know. Some of them have even written scripts for the show themselves. Many of them have been writing Doctor Who novels for quite some time, too. Dunno about some of the other shows, though.

I think you should only feel jealous if you are writing gen fanfic or stores that are otherwise plot-oriented, because then you might be writing stuff that is actually considered for those side stories. With few exceptions, the majority of fandom is made up of shippers shipping non-canon pairings, and their stuff is not getting published. Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not particularly jealous of Lee Goldberg, especially since I've read one of his books.

But overall, yeah, I hear you.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I RELATE. And a lot of those authors really aren't that good.

Maybe you should try for the job? I wouldn't know where to tell you to start, but someone does it right? So why not you?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
fan fiction?

lee goldberg's gonna get you

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. And I've thought this since I saw my first "novel based on a TV show" back in the '70's.

[identity profile] bamf2me.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Most of these types of books are really, REALLY terrible. You wonder if the writer ever bothered to watch the show/movie/whatever the 'novel' is 'based' on, or even just do any research beyond "what were the characters names again?". For shows that were canceled before the plot was resolved, these books are suppose to tie up loose ends for fans. Dark Angel books are a great example, horrible horrible things. Or fans hope for some character development for a second string character.

You can usually tell if the book is worth getting by looking up the author and seeing if they are fans of anything (even if not of the actual series they are writing a book for now) or not. Writers that are fans themselves of something tend to at least understand fans' interest and try to do a good job. Those who are just in for a paycheck ... well, usually they are just filling an obligation and don't actually care.

Saddest are the books that are written by writers from the show the 'novel' is based on and the characters are so ooc and plots are vapid. Nice to know how they really see the show/movie/whatever.

For half a second I thought this was a Monk secret and was going to be so geeking happy.

A bit upset it isn't, but still, amen to that Anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't written for any of those series but where I'd say it's different from fanfic is that the point of fanfic is to explore things you find interesting about the characters or series. It's slightly different writing a tie-in book--more like if you were writing an episode for the TV series. You come up with a story that TPTV approve etc. There's a lot of crossover with fanfic, but tie-in novels are also any other writing job.

Most fanfic would never be acceptable as a tie-in novel, and probably most or many tie-in novels would be unpopular as fic.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
They are getting paid to write fanfic, but I'm not sure I envy the job, to be honest. Unless you already write things that are very similar to the source material in terms of tone and plot, I think it could be challenging. Those writers aren't usually given much room to explore.

Plus, I don't think this would be a risk with all tie-in novels, but sometimes I think it could be kind of high pressure. If the tie-in novels for that fandom are taken as canon or semi-canon, then people can get pissed if you do manage to do anything major, like kill a character.

Wait, there's novels for Warehouse 13? OMG! DO WANT! Brb, hunting down a copy...

P.S. The Stone Rose is my favourite of the Doctor Who novels so thanks for using that pic.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 06:02 am (UTC)(link)

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The Warehouse 13 novel just came out within this last week or two. I'm going to get it after the weekend. I'm so excited for it!

And yeah, I haven't read many Doctor Who books but The Stone Rose was my first and my favorite so I had to include it :D
