If you think they're poorly directed, I'd hate to see what you think is good.

Stellar performances out of everyone in the cast doesn't just happen by magic. How else do you think they were nominated (and won) for multiple Best Ensemble Cast awards?

...because a lot of amazing actors were cast? And then not properly directed. Also, I wouldn't say "x number of awards = good"-- anyone can tell you that it's a lot of politics involved, and awards don't always equal good no matter what.

Great direction? There's plenty. Give Let the Right One In a watch, or Inglourious Basterds or Pan's Labyrinth. Or anything directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Brilliant stuff, never wastes a moment trying too hard.

TL;DR about movies

Even good actors can't save a performance if the direction is bad, with the exception of Ewan McGregor in any of the Star Wars prequels. I won't watch those movies of my own volition, but if I'm forced to, he's the only thing I enjoy. Even then, it's super hokey at times. That is an example of bad direction.

I've been an actor my entire life and I've been on both sides of the camera. When stellar performances are pulled out, 9 times out of 10, it is the director that pulls it out. I'm not a fan of The King's Speech (too Inspirational Oscar Movie for me), but I can't deny the directing and the performances Tom Hooper pulled out of that ensemble were fantastic.

I've seen Inglorious Basterds. Absolutely nothing about the direction of that movie stood out to me. It's Tarantino. The performances are way too over the top. I certainly wouldn't call the direction of that better than the direction of LOTR. Certainly not "high quality" direction. Tarantino's had some good movies, sure, but I don't call him a great director. He relies way too much on shock value in his movies. I say this as someone who has one of his movies in my Top 5 of all time. He is neither consistently good or consistently bad.

Del Toro is fantastic, agreed there. He is an enthusiastic and talented director. Tarantino has the enthusiasm, but I don't think he has the talent Del Toro has. IMO, they're not even in the same league. I would've loved him as the director of The Hobbit, but I don't see that he and Jackson are very different in style, anyway. Both pull out fantastic ensemble casts, and they both rely on similar story structure.

I can't comment on Let the Right One In, but that's mainly because it hasn't been a part of my film education. (I'm also not a horror fan.)
