When I was in junior high, I read adult novels.

Now that I'm an adult, I read YA novels.

75% of the time, the YA novels are more innovative and less formulaic/derivative, and all around better. (HELLO MAJORITY OF STAR WARS EU NOVELS I SEE YOU THERE.)

Too old to read YA?

YOU CAN HAVE MY TAMORA PIERCE BOOKS WHEN YOU PRISE THEM FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS.

I find the same thing - there's innovative adult fantasy and crappy YA fantasy, but for the most part YA fantasy authors seem to have more of a free rein. Cause, y'know, it's for teenagers so you can do what you like. There's a Diana Wynne Jones quote on the subject somewhere - I can't find it online but it's somewhere along the lines of 'in adult fantasy you can have magic or spaceships, but you can't have people doing magic on spaceships; in children's fantasy no-one will bat an eyelid'.

...this woman is now my hero. I've wanted stories with vampires and witches in space for AGES. (Granted, it was born of a desire for "Angel"/"Firefly" crossover fic, since the logical conclusion of vampires living forever is that they'll end up in space. But still!)

Sadly the book she was talking about is one of her weakest. It's A Sudden Wild Magic, if you're interesting, but it's not technically set in space.

Pretty much this.

OP, my sister became an English teacher largely because in order to be able to discuss reading with her students, she gets to read a lot of YA fic. You're not alone.
