Since the secrets (through no fault of their own :P) aren't really that interesting to me today, I though I could ask...

Any books to rec? :)

I don't care about genres or whether it's a series or not, I'm just looking for a book that really grabs you and won't let you put it down!

Suggestions? Favourites?

Yay, book recs! I'd like to recommend The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. It's technically a fantasy, but with lots of action, comedy and crime thrown in. It's the first in a series with only two books out so far and the author is unreliable a la GRRM, but I do think Lies can be read as a stand-alone novel.

I'd also rec GRRM, Pat Rothfuss and Robin Hobb if you haven't read any of their stuff already.

Republic of Thieves, the next (final?) book in the Gentleman Bastards series, is coming out in November.

And just so you know, that "unreliable" author has been battling severe depression after his marriage fell apart, causing the 3 year delay.

Hmm, wiki has Gentlemen Bastards as planned for 7 books, so no, not the final.

Sorry, that was bad wording on my part. I do know he's been suffering from depression and don't at all feel resentful about having to wait longer for the next books because of it. I just wanted to make a long story short for the OP because some people want to be warned about long waits in a series. I'm sorry if I caused offense.

I'm really psyched to hear about that release date though! I knew it was a prospective date on amazon but I tend not to trust their release dates. But that's awesome if it's confirmed!

Upon rereading my comment, it came across as a lot more bitchy than I intended. Sorry about that. I meant it more as a warning to be careful about how you talk about the delay as it might come off as being dismissive of depression and you might get shit for it. I've seen people get horribly dogpiled for it when they honestly didn't know the reason for the delay. Instead, I came off as a dogpiler. I'm sorry.

A Song of Ice and Fire is already on my to read list for the summer. :D I will check those others out, too. Thanks for the recs. :) And as long as Lies doesn't end with a cliffhanger, I don't mind.

As far as I can remember, it doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but there are insinuations of a further story. Honestly, I do think it can be read as a stand-alone if you want. Happy reading!

I just read "Ghostwritten" by David Mitchell and it was wonderful! It's sort of genre-defying, in that it's general fiction but with some wacky science and fun ghosts. Not to mention stunning characters, wonderful prose, and awesome introspection about the world...

World War Z, Max Brooks. It's utterly believable, which is crazy from zombie fiction.

I WISH I COULD GET A YOUTUBE THING TOGETHER WHERE ONE PERSON AUDITIONS FOR THE 'NARRATOR' ROLE, AND THEN PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER COULD SUBMIT THEIR OWN READINGS OF CERTAIN SECTIONS.

I just want that guy with the puppies to get a chance, okay? T___T

Also, OP, I'm rather fond of the 'Montmorency' series by Eleanor Updale, ANYTHING by Patricia C. Wrede, Tamora Pierce's books, and if you like fantasy/romance, the "Tales of the 500 Kingdoms" books by Mercedes Lackey. :)

I certainly do like fantasy, but I'm always kind of split on the romance part. :P Maybe if I'm lucky my bookstore has some books by Mercedes Lackey in stock and I can ckeck them out. (Though I really don't dare to hope. Damn you, non-English speaking country! :P)

Please you know, and know your tastes maybe? ~~Or I could link you to the tvtropes page~~ ^^;; (They were written specifically for some romance label). ^^;; Also, "Black Swan" (no relation to the movie) by her is also pretty good IMHO. Especially if you're familiar with 'Swan Lake'. :)

"The Little Stranger" by Sarah Waters. It is one of the best books I have ever read. Fiction, with a touch of supernatural elements.

Or, if you don't mind classics, "The House of Mirth" by Edith Wharton or "Between the Acts" by Virginia Woolf. Both of those are stunning.

"Go Tell It on the Mountain" by James Baldwin blows my mind every time I reread it. it's about a screwed up family in Harlem in the '30s grappling with love and religion (and way better than my horrible description).

and "Mother Night" by Vonnegut is so funny and depressing that it kills me.

Ohh, looked it up and it really sounds interesting (and your one-sentence summary is just fine :P).

When I was 17 I had a serious Vonnegut-loving phase. I'm kind of shocked I haven't read "Mother Night" yet! Thanks! :)

The Mother Earth series by Ally Blue (Dragon's Kiss and Shenandoah). Gay romance between warrior men, and a touch of fantasy, in a post-apocalyptic primitive world. Love the world, and love love love the characters.

Sorry to be late, but these are some of my favourite books:

Wind Up Bird Chronicle, by Haruki Murakami (it starts off slow, but it's sort of surreal and I think it's interesting. The war parts were especially good.)

Angelica, by Arthur Phillips (About a Victorian family whose daughter seems to be haunted by a ghost. Most of the book is through the mother's POV, in third person, but then goes through the rest of the family and the exorcist.)

Water For Elephants, by Sarah Gruen (Man joins the circus as a veterinarian and falls in love with a co-worker. It switches between then and his 90 year-old self and I thought his voice was just engrossing.)

Ella Minnow Pea, by Mark Dunn (There's an island where people idolize the creator of "The quick fox" phrase. He is a statue with the phrase underneath; the letters fall one by one and the island council sees it as a sign to leave out the letters in their speech and mail, with consequences to whomever uses them after the deadline. Written in letters and an easy read. If you like it, you should also check out his other book "Under the Harrow".)

Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman (Man helps a girl on the street, who is a princess escaping assassination. They travel 'London Below' to stop the enemies. Good fantasy read.)

The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To, by D.C. Pierson (Exactly what it says, though it's mostly a teen friendship story. Not the best ending, but I felt the rest of the story was worth a read and I just liked reading about their teen adventures.)

Skeleton Creek series, by Patrick Carman (YA, but interesting and well-written. I've only read the first two, since technically the main story ended there. Guy and his lady friend investigated the nearby abandoned mill in their small town, and are forbidden from seeing each other. They send each other emails and look into a secret society based around the mill.)

Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier (Nameless protagonist marries a widow and lives in a huge English manor where the previous wife is the talk of everyone. A good classic; I personally found the scenery descriptions hard to read but everything else was fine.)

We Have Always Lived in the Castle, by Shirley Jackson (A girl and her older sister live in a castle above the town and rarely come out because of the peoples' hatred for them. One of their cousins come by and try to coax them out. It's short and has nice suspense.)

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs (I actually haven't read it, but I plan to and it sounded very nice! It's about a boy whose grandfather told him all about the peculiar children and showed him photographs. His grandfather dies when he is a teenager, but he receives a letter that prompts him to investigate an island in search of the children. There's also actual photographs included within the book.)
