I get you, but I get why they wrote him in, too. Most of the movie would have been just her thinking out loud or monologue-voiceovering if he wasn't there. She's on her own for so much of the story, they wanted her to have someone other than the cat to talk to - and it's harder to get things across on film without conversation. (Plus I REALLY liked Wybie, idk. What the Other Mother did to other-him was one of the creepiest moments in the whole movie to me - "he pulled a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG face....and mother didn't like it." I thought it was a rare addition that actually really worked. But to each their own)

I think more conversations with the cat could have worked, perhaps. I didn't mind Wybie that much until the end. The end was the worst, in my opinion. Coraline set such a clever trap in the book, and in the movie she has no plan at all, and then Wybie shows up just in time. That's what bothered me the most.

I agree that what the Other Mother did to him was one of the creepier things though.

They COULD have made her talk to the cat more, it would've worked but I'm still super-fond of the movie as-is. And...dammit, I can't remember her trap in the end. I should reread it! But I guess they thought "we put this guy in, might as well make him do something awesome" and even though he did pretty much save her ass, I doubt ANYONE could've watched that movie and NOT thought Coraline was a completely awesome and incredibly clever girl. But if it Just Bugs You there's nothing you can do =/ adaptations always come with that possibility. I've been there.
