Saying 'Overrated' is overrated, or at least overused. How do you prove that something's objectively not that great rather than you just not liking it?

Even though I've fallen out of love with Gaiman in a big way since hitting my 20s, and was going to agree with the OP, I agree with this comment more.

I still love Sandman, and Good Omens. American Gods is good too. But the rest of his novels... they're all a bit blah really.

I love Sandman and the short stories. Everything else not so much. (Even though I do have a Good Omen's icon. :-P) But I wouldn't say they're "overrated" though; I'm not even sure what that means.

I suppose that in fandom and online, there's a whole lot of enthusiasm for his work and he has many die-hard fans. But out in the 'real' world, most people won't have heard of him. So it is pretty hard to say if he's over-rated.

Yeah, basically. I mean, saying something is underrated makes a certain amount of sense because you can take into account the fact that it might not be very well known, etc. But 90% of the time I see something called overrated, it's basically shorthand for "I didn't like it so I don't think other people should either!"

That said, I'm a fan of Neil Gaiman, but I don't think everything he's done is brilliant (far from it; about half his stuff bores me, and some of it was okay but not GENIUS). Still, if what he's writing appeals to and resonates with a lot of people, who am I to argue with that?
