To me, the older FF games are so much different than the newer ones that it's sort of weird to make general statements about the entire series.

I've only played two FF games before, the very first one (when I was a kid, like eight or nine years old, I never beat it either, but holy shit did I love that game*) and FFX (up until I got so annoyed with it I quit). Right now I'm playing the DS version of FFIV and I love it, but I have no desire to play FF7 or anything made afterward. To me it's like a totally different franchise after that.
