Fair enough, but I'd also add that stepping stones can go in the opposite direction, but people are much less likely to find those recommendations acceptable or take them seriously.

And, of course, sometimes people aren't looking to be enriched or whatever from reading. Sometimes people are just looking for a little brain candy. And there's nothing wrong with that. I spend my entire professional day reading complex social science publications. I'm not going to do it for fun too.

I think, for me, recommending books is such a touchy subject, because individual tastes vary greatly, and there can be (un)intentional connotations of judgment or condescension if someone doesn't share yours or if the recommender's attitude comes across as pretentious. For the record, I too enjoy many different genres and have read many "brainy" books. But I very rarely recommend books or authors, especially when I'm not asked for recommendations, because it's such a personal thing.
