(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)You sound a lot like me back when I was in college. I had friends, but I really wasn't too interested in partying or drinking or whatever. I had the same "ah-ha!" moment you did when I read the autobiography of CS Lewis. He talked about hating being forced into social situations, and though he didn't necessarily dislike people, he HAD to get away and be by himself sometimes. There was a lot more to it than that, but I remember feeling as though it was some sort of revelation - that I wasn't alone in all that, and that I could still be like someone whom I greatly admired even if I was introverted and not interested in the same things other people were. In the words of our dear vice president, it was a big fucking deal.
But I want to let you in on a secret of the universe: eventually, provided you don't become a total recluse, all of these personality traits will actually HELP you as you get a little older. You're going to emerge from university with a greater understanding of the broader world, yourself, your special skills, and quite honestly, your curiosity itself will lead you to some fantastic places, both in your head and in the outside world. All of these things are absolutely essential to be a functioning, emotionally mature adult. So don't think you're weird. You're ahead of the curve, that's all.
