I don't understand...what topic? You mean like if the topic of SPN comes up you pretend you're in the fandom? I don't think you need to be in fandom to have your opinions listened to--sometimes fandom's nuts, after all.

When would SPN ever come up in a group of people that aren't fans of the show. Or if they are casual viewers, why would they care how active you are in the online fandom?

And you are talking with other fandom members, aren't you part of the fandom already, since discussing a show with others is a huge part of fandom?

I think I kind of get what OP means... not having written fic for years and years, I've occasionally pretended to be more involved in fandom than I am so I could better defend it when 'those perverted slash fans' or 'those silly fanfiction writers' has come up in conversation... talking about my teenage years writing fic would make it look like fic is only for teenagers, which it isn't.

Yeah 'cause sometimes if I'd admit that I wasn't active in a fandom then my opinion would suddenly not matter even if I knew something about what was being talked about.

I meant a topic about something in fandom. I have never watched SPN but after someone tells me all the things they did or didn't like in an episode I can create an opinion based on that and agree or disagree with them. It can apply to other fandoms too and people have often agreed with me even though I don't know the source very well.
