I think it's the other way around, really. Feminism isn't about rejecting "traditional feminine behavior." To me it's more about rejecting the notion that being feminine is inherently bad just as much as rejecting the notion that a woman must exhibit "traditional feminine behavior" in order to be considered a 'respectable' woman. To me it's two sides of the same coin.

This.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. That and I think a lot of people get sick of what they call baby plotlines.

[identity profile] later-tuesday.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It doesn't matter what a woman does, society will feel it has the right to judge her.

Wait what-- Cable's Mom was Madelyne Pryor.

And that's not Sarah Connor pictured, that's Cameron.

That's always annoyed me. Yes, I will never have kids and don't see the allure. That doesn't mean that I will ever fault someone else for having them. But, I hate how some people can only accept their choice if they're kick ass and awesome moms! If they're an average soccer mom or stereotypical housewife, they get dumped on. You all came from moms people, stop taking a shit on them.

One of my favourite female characters, who is also a (future) mum, is Marge Gunderson from Fargo.

I love seeing characters who are both badass and have kids, because really, it's not like the two cancel each other out. And I say this as someone who never intends to have kids

I totally agree. Women can have children and a family without having an ounce of their badassery tarnished, and I don't really understand the perception that wanting a family = spitting in the face of the women's right's movement. It really makes no sense

BUT

Sometimes it bothers me when there's a woman on a show or whatever who in canon just doesn't want to settle down and have children, has stated such on numerous occasions and has plenty of valid reasons for her decision and then suddenly out of nowhere she's like "OH MY GOD MY LIFE WILL NOT BE COMPLETE UNLESS I HAVE A BABY"

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
This is how I feel about people who hate on characters with big boobs/that wear dresses/that are healers/that like pink/etc because OMGIT'SGIRLYITSUCKS!!!1

They are not worth your time.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Not everybody thinks that, dude. I love me a badass mom! I think what you're describing is kind of a backlash to how unfortunately some stories seem to do nothing with their female characters but PUT SOME BABIES IN EM, but still, becoming a mom obviously doesn't make an awesome woman LESS awesome.

(though *can't help it, sorry*..Cable isn't Jean Grey's son, he's Maddie Pryor's. STILL, JEAN'S PRETTY BOSS)

Basically what others have said about backlash; I mean, when you juxtapose mother-characters in general against father-characters in general, you can see how massively disproportionate the focus on having a family is for the mothers, even when the show is ostensibly about them in their role as...whatever else their role is. See: Commander in Chief vs. West Wing, off the top of my head.

I'm not saying that "Real women don't wear dresses," and I agree we need to fight the thread within feminism that 'the feminine is bad' (to what extent it does exist) but I think that there's a history of narratives going too far in the other direction, and that causes wariness/hostility about it.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
The way I've always seen it, it's not that women who want to have children are bad; what's bad are stories in which female characters are 1) predominantly defined by their roles as mothers or 2) not complete until they have children, and this is because 3) that is already society's predominant narrative, and 4) the writers of these media are making an active choice to portray female characters this way.

How a woman wants to live her life is up to her! But how writers treat female characters does have implications for feminism.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's about feminsm - yes, you can of course be a feminist and still want kids. Some people might be disappointed if that's all you want, though, especially if you're talented.
And if you're talking about fic or stories -I prefer childless characters, not because they're better somehow, but because Im not so interested in storylines dealing with raising kids, myself. (Though I made an exception for the Cable/Hope storyline)

Yeah those women that shame other women for having kids are not feminists. Quite the opposite really.

Wait Molly is Harry's mom? In the "I've known my bff for so long I just call his mom 'mom' now" kind of way or for real mom? Cause I never read the last book and um what?

[identity profile] spam-27.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Having kids is what the man wants us to do. Obviously no woman actually wants to have kids. And once they do their life is forfeit.

Kinda reminds me how I saw an article about feminists who look down on feminine women as the enemy. Because equality for women.. I mean the ones that agree with me.

[identity profile] feanorian.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think anyone who thinks a traditional woman character who wants children *cannot* be awesome should read FMA and take a look at Izumi Curtis. She defines herself as "just a housewife" and the defining actions (and consequences) of her life are related to the outcome of her pregnancy. She is also possibly the most awesome person to ever be awesome, and despite what she says about herself it's immediately clear that she's not "just" anything.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just going to politely point out how the secret maker only chose to portray white women in the position of awesome moms. It makes me wonder if we're stuck in the wrong age of feminism debate, first wave rather than third.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
The feminists want your blood? Yeah. Look at them. They're practically breaking down the door. Straw man argument, much?

[identity profile] naviechance.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Thankfully that's something I've never encountered in any of my fandoms. I imagine it would annoy me too, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-07 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Jean Grey was never a mother. Being a mother is not the reason some fans don't like her.

Nathan is rightfully Madelyne Pryor's son, never her own. I don't give a shit how anyone else tries to justify things.

Rachel was technically never intended to be a child of Jean's either, at least, not with Cyclops. The intention of Rachel's character was retconned. All you see are AU versions of children that are never Jean's.
