let's put it this way: the MPDG/sad grounded boy relationship in real life usually ends with one of the two going insane. Or at least an unhealthy level of codependence.
I've been there. I was someone's MPDG. And they put all their happiness on me, like I was their only source of inspiration. Do you know what a burden that is? The problem with being put on a pedestal is, well, you're on a pedestal. There's no room to be a human being. All of your flaws are seen by the other person as attacks against them because they've invested so much in your perfection.
Even the milder cases... (yes, i've chronically been this — one of the sad facts of being outgoing, vivacious, and liking more melancholy types) dudes who want MPDGs typically have no ability to stand up for themselves in a healthy manner. They either get abusive or they use their melancholia as a weapon.
And if you're the teetering-on-the-edge-of-mania sort of MPDG, nervous breakdowns are nowhere near as glamorous or fun IRL.
A partner should inspire you in some aspects of your life, too. Mutual inspiration is part of a good foundation for a relationship. My current boyfriend inspires me intellectually, even though he's much more depressive than I am; more importantly, when I have my seasonal depression, we work together to get through it instead of him freaking out because suddenly I'm not perfect and ~inspiring~.
