In fact, a lot of people tend to overlook that most of the notable shipwars tend to come from het fandoms.

Yep. As someone said upthread, this is because there are often canon het love triangles where there is actually a chance one side will "win" and the other will "lose," so there's more at stake in people's minds. I mean, there are some slash ship wars, but I never seen any that touch the crazy that I've seen come out of canon love triangles (or perceived canon love triangles *cough Harry/Hermione cough*).
