YMMV. A lot of people think the visuals are beautiful, especially compared to its predecessors, but they aren't a patch on the secret's image. The Create-a-Sim lighting is also a higher quality than the in-game lighting, so Sims have a tendency to look different from what you thought you were making once you start playing them.

I'd be happy to see a viable alternate-Sims at all, be it open-source or proprietary.

the main thing keeping me away from ts3 is that i really don't like that time passes everywhere, so if i made two households and play one for too long, i might come back to the other one and it's like, "wait, you are dating WHO now?" not that this didn't sort of happen within big households in ts2, but there i can totally take the blame for not paying enough attention. but if i'm playing with another house, I AM MOUSEGOD, YOU OBEY MY AUTHORITY, SIMS

so would i, seriously. some competition would be fabulous. i just meant, if I had to do it myself, i'd go open source so that it's not just free as in beer, but free as in speech. and free as in "hey, modders! no reverse engineering! you can totally look at the code to figure out what the fuck i did and what you want to change!" half the fun of the sims fandom for me is seeing all the awesome creativity that people come up with to customize their game to their tastes. making it easier to do that can only be a good thing!

You can turn story progression off, which is what you're talking. It'll play like the Sims games before where one household advances and the others don't. I found it annoying when I made a Claire and Leon sim from Resident Evil. I put Claire in first, then played with Leon for a bit. I go back to Claire and she's knocked up! o_O It must've only be like 2 sims days...

But I will say even thought EA's framework for the game is still a mess, they have made it easier to put custom files in. It took them long enough to patch it so all one needs to do is make a folder named 'Mods'. Instead of jumping through hoops just to get another hairstyle in the game.

I was thinking the other day that it'd be great to have other games developed like the Sims. Except I think EA/Maxis division have a lock and key on the intellectual rights. :/ The closest you'll find is a Life Simulation game and even those are in low supply.
