I don't hate either one, though I stopped watching Lost pretty early on, but I get annoyed that they always seem to top newer lists of "best sci-fi tv shows". Because, seriously? Have you only ever watched sci-fi made in the past ten years? Did you just get distracted by the fact that they could afford decent CGI?

Seriously though. I'm not sure we've proved BSG and LOST's staying power yet, regardless of their objective quality, esp. considering both shows always struck me as notably dependent on contemporary social fears/issues (rather than grounded or influenced by them, and BSG moreso than LOST) it's kind of jumping the gun to place them above stuff like B5, Blakes 7, The Twilight Zone, Farscape ect.

Well I think BSG definitely has cult status already and I think it's far better than Farscape, but that's subjective. BSG is already too entrenched in popular culture (both thanks to the original series and the 2003 revival). It is staying. LOST is a phenomenon that is unlikely to just disappear as well.

I didn't mean entrenched in pop culture, I meant that BSG's drama and tension was drawn so carefully and completely from the post-911 world-on-fire paranoia that I found the show didn't actually work very hard to cultivate it's own sense of pathos. It was just BAD THINGS ARE HAPPENING AND THINGS ARE BAD CUTE CHILDREN DYING EVERYONE IS GRIM from the start without any build, without any context, without any explanation really? It's utterly dire nature dripping sometimes ridiculous melodrama from every pore with no subtly attempted managed to resonate, I think, because it was shown to a television audience living in a paranoid world and primarily in a nation that's government had worked very hard to make them feel cornered and hunted (coincidentally, also by a religiously "incompatible" society of "fanatics"). I always felt that it was popular (among non-sci fi fans I mean) for the same reason torture porn horror movies sky-rocketed in mass appeal after events like the Abu Gharib scandal; these issues and anxieties are already on people's minds, it doesn't take much to manufacture drama.

Of course, the fact that it was so keyed into the time period it was written in could be beneficial to it's future rep as well! I'm just saying that we're not going to know for a few years yet whether or not it holds up or just looks trite in retrospect. I'm not personally a fan, but I don't debate it should be on "best of" lists, I just side-eye it getting into the top slots.

As for LOST... I think the cultural significance of LOST isn't so much that it's a great sci-fi show. It's that it was one of the shows responsible for changing the way American television has been written for the past few years, for better or worse.

I actually think Farscape is much better than BSG.... for what it is. Farscape wasn't nearly as ambitious as BSG and, especially in the later seasons, it succeeded in being exactly what it wanted to be: a quirky character drama with bizarre aliens, offbeat humour and an exciting (if not terribly deep) plot. BSG tried for more but was... unfortunately pretty conceptually flawed on almost every level despite individual aspects of it being fantastic. :/

See, I love both BSG and Farscape, but I think Farscape is better. And I /love/ most of BSG [ending stuff, like a lot of people. Also I get that Farscape gets more slack for the ending due to the circumstances, but that still doesn't excuse BSG].

I'm beginning to think one of the biggest reasons? Farscape never seemed to really lose track of the story they were telling. They had the advantage of having fewer characters to focus on, but there still were a decent amount of characters involved. And they had a long ongoing story just as BSG did.

But also? The character development which was consistent (IMO) and happened with every single character. That in some ways it feels a /lot/ more realistic to me (which is odd, I know) than other shows. It was that they had their world so down that they could do dramatic episodes, comedic episodes, action and adventure episodes, slow episodes, fast episodes, one-offs stories, epic stories, etc, etc, and it pretty much never felt like it was the "special different episode" of Farscape. It just was, and it worked. They also trusted their audience, which I loved.

I also admit to getting a little bit frustrated when the creators/actors/fans of BSG (mostly the ones who aren't into other sci-fi) claim a lot of things to be true about BSG that just aren't. Mostly in the "we were the first" and "we are the only ones" and "aren't we so creative". Because they weren't. It was a brilliantly made tv show. But there were other sci-fi shows before them with epic story lines (Babylon 5 for one), the same special effects people (Firefly), and that it was awesome because it wasn't like other sci-fi to the extent that it sounded like they were saying other sci-fi was shit (and that may well have NOT been what they meant, but that's what I started taking out of it after a while).

But again, I still love BSG. I just. Have some issues with it at the same time.

Also that I think Farscape is one of the best science fiction shows ever. And that it's made for science fiction fans, and trusts them, and they had a smart show going on there. So that it will never reach the levels of BSG just because it's not 'as friendly' to 'non sci-fi' fans, irritates me.

So basically yes. I am admitting my biases. But I still think Farscape is better when I look past those biases. That's what I wanted to say.

But also, to each their own :D

Those lists usually feel like they've only skimmed the surface of recent stuff, yeah.

I don't totally mind when Lost is placed as Scifi, but I feel like it's way more fantasy.
