Not the OC

(Anonymous) 2011-07-10 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it really that hard to believe? It's not like it would have been the first time that a book written in one language had been adapted for the stage in another, and considering how popular it is in the US and UK (it ran on Broadway for how long?) I can EASILY see how someone could be aware of it without knowing its entire history.

Mamma Mia is set in Greece, sung in English and written by Swedes, so whence the Italian title, eh?

I understand your distress, but just to illustrate, Disney made an original musical out of Notre Dame de Paris--Victor Hugo again!--in English. I'm not surprised there are people who don't realize Les Mis is originally French.

No, Victor Hugo isn't obscure, hence the comment about books written in one language being adapted for the stage in another. Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil, on the other hand, aren't exactly household names, at least not in most English-Speaking countries.

this is completely ridiculous logic.

That's exactly the point, though, it's not obscure stuff. The fact that Hugo's pretty well-known in English-speaking countries is why it's a fairly easy mistake to make (and one I made for years before I randomly happened to run across the info somewhere), because it really is plausible that an English speaker might adapt the book in the first place. Especially when you compare it to Phantom of the Opera...
