Aww, are we going to start finger-pointing about who's had a harder time hanging on to their empire? To be fair, the world's a lot savvier about such things now, so the U.S. is not likely to acquire one to lose, despite whatever Idiot-In-Charge's best efforts to do so by leveraging military or corporate threats. Nor am I sure either of us is better than the other. I think the rest of the world would probably have a lot of opinions about the U.S. and the UK on that score - and it probably wouldn't be fun to hear.

I completely agree about France and Spain. Exploiting others' vendettas for one's own advancement is an enduring human tendency. Britain of course knows as much about that as any other nation does. I'm not sure where you were going by bringing this up, but I'm not going to pound my fist and insist the colonists drove back the redcoats all on their own. Unlike the eminently quotable Doublemint Tea Party Twins, I've read history. :-)

Hell, I won't even bring up how Rupert Murdoch managed to damn near dupe your superior country into giving him even more media control by having employees tap into dead people's voicemails with your police's cooperation - mainly because I'm not convinced it hasn't happened here, too. (In fact, I'm pretty sure any concerted investigation would show that it HAS.)

But really? I was just addressing the OP's talk-down tone toward Americans, like we're a bunch of clueless hayseeds dazzled by an accent. Some of us know history; some of us even lived through part of it so far to remember. (Hey, you know what? It's possible both our countries have the same percentage of morons in the population. Imagine such a crazy thing!)
