The difference is that other collectors don't end up living in their parents' basement surrounded by $2500 figures of chicks in bikinis and life-size freaky pillows.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
You act like one is a symptom of the other.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
not necessarily. There are plenty of people living in their parents' basements surrounded by athletic memorabilia, signed LPs, comic books, whatever. There's a difference between being a fan and a fanatic.

Hey, you like what you like, Anon. It sounds like you know how to manage your spendings properly without being excessive about it. And if they bring you happiness, who cares?

Personally, I think a lot of these figures are SO COOL and would look awesome on a shelf in my room next to my Shaun of the Dead and The Crow figures but I just can't justify spending that much for them. \: Especially when they're not even articulated.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
This is exactly how I feel about it. I'm a pretty big figure collector and I do buy the scaled figures, though I'm also careful about not overdoing it.

It's kind of sad how heavily people are judged for collecting things like this. It's just merchandise collecting and it's not any different from any other form of it, except that sports memorabilia and the like is accepted by the mainstream.

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
As long as it does not adversely affect your life, there is no problem. Frankly, I see it like a really nerdy art obsession. Don't spend so much money on your figurines that you have to eat ramen for a month or your power gets shut off. That's the trap a lot of the "crazy" collectors get into, where they buy a $500 articulated doll and then complain that they don't have the money for the rent, or it starts to take over their lives. You seem like you're going about this in exactly the right way. Keep it sane, and you're in the clear.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. The only other problem I could see besides that is if you're a risque hentai figurine collector. They're not exactly something you should leave on display when you have company over.

[identity profile] yuumeko.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
this exactly, too much of anything is bad, just as a little bit of something doesn't hurt.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-16 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
TOO MUCH LOVE WILL KILL YOU JUST AS SURE AS NONE AT ALL

TOO MUCH LOVE IS KNOWN TO CAUSE DISEASES LIKE DEATH

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I feel ya. I collect assorted stuff (toys, dolls, keys, spoons). Buying figures is just like buying what-nots; they cost money and are only really useful for decoration. But, if it makes you happy (and you can afford it) there's no problem.

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I guess your friends don't understand people who collect art either, since all you can do is look at it. *rolls eyes* Honestly, it's good that you ignore their stupid comments. You have a hobby and that's great. Just as long as it doesn't take over your life (ie. spending money on a figure rather than on food), then it's ok. You sound like you've got a handle on it anyways. Don't be embarrassed. ^^

Also, haters gonna hate.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
As long as you're not 30 and still living with your parents, talking to the figures as if they were real, or jacking off over them like a total creep, I think you're probably fine.

420 spend money on drugs, alcohol, and PVC women errday

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
If you keep your finances straight and don't spend more than you have, it's a good thing, I think! I collect some JPop idol goods and I love my Tsumugi (from K-on) figure; it's fun, not silly.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
did someone submit a secret of my life? I love figures too, anon. I have a shelf of them. Not a lot, but I love them and I want more. I'm the same way with posters/wallscrolls. I know I run out of room to put them, but I take good care of them. I don't see the big fuss about the point of figures. People collect things they don't need all the time. They are just to look at, and even if I fall out of a series, my figure is like a souvenir of that once fandom, a reminder of something I really liked and should look back at.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I love figures. I got into them around early 2009, I think, and I've really enjoyed following various Figma releases. I occasionally collect plushies and the rare PVC statue as well. I love how versatile poseable figures are, so I only pick up a PVC statue if it has a nice dynamic pose and is beautifully crafted.

I say collect what you like. If you come back and see these comments, please link me to a photo of your collection if you have one!

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Delicious Revy~ ;u;

...I have a few. Not a lot but I got a $100 one and hnng.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Psssssh, haters gonna hate. I collect, my partner collects, and together, we have an awesomely decorated nerd-cave.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Not much of a collector, but damn I want Black Lagoon everything.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with being a collector. :D I love my anime figures, they're so well sculpted! I know I've literally spent hundreds of dollars on them but every single one was worth it.

Keep on collecting OP!

[identity profile] yuumeko.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
you tell 'em. its really no different than having a poster... except this one is 3D! or, i mean, come on statues are pretty useless, but they represent something at least. lets be proud!

...hold on, ITS NOT AN ACTION FIGURE, MOM, ITS A FIGURINE ;_;

[identity profile] yuumeko.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
and fyi, my room's walls currently are covered in kamina, saber, and miku posters, with my Saber figma figures displayed valiantly. Saber, Miku, and some Odin Sphere figures are the only ones I've considered blowing some serious money on, and even then, I treat it like a luxury far-off.
