Do you not get what a secret is, or do you just not get hyperbole?

... isn't the whole "I'd get a ton of shit for this" idea the whole point of Fandom Secrets? People say the secrets here because they don't want to own their opinions. If everyone did own their unpopular opinions, Fandom Secrets probably wouldn't exist.

Eh, I get what you're saying, OP. I've got a bunch of fandom-related secrets I wouldn't tell through any medium but this, but it's not because I'm afraid anyone on my flist would defriend me or I'd be dogpiled or whatever. I agree that that's often a gross exaggeration when people add lines like that to their series because come on. Does anyone really care that much?

All the people giving you shit for this are probably the same people who have made secrets with the "people will kill me for this" and "I will be shunned FOREVER!!" stuff. Which, yeah, hyperbole is hyperbole but someone disagreeing with you about fandom of all things is nowhere even near hyperbolic murder.

Also it's "fandom secrets" not "somewhat unpopular fandom opinions." And I don't see how this is any less of a secret than 90% of the shit that gets put up here.

Do you not understand that "___ would kill me for this" is a commonly used phrase, and when someone uses it, they usually don't mean that they actually believe someone would kill them?

Sure, OP didn't say outright "people would kill me for saying this," but you still went on to anonymously state your unpopular opinion rather than own up to it personally. One: hyperbole, look it up.

Two: sometimes it's better to keep an unpopular opinion to yourself. I don't see why you should have to on your own journal but I can understand not telling certain people about it because you don't want to put up with them getting mad/offended AND you also don't want to harsh someone else's squee.

I totally agree. I have been in fandoms where I've expressed unpopular opinions, and no one shunned me forever. If we're going to praise people who are unnecessarily afraid of negative reactions, then we're praising people who think they need to act like sheep to get accepted.

There's a point where a hyperbole becomes a cliche, and in this instance we are way past that point. So spare me, "My hastily-made misspelled Paint secret has literary elements in it!"

Actually, in really crazy fandoms like Supernatural or Doctor Who, I'd believe there are people who would issue death threats over that sort of disagreement.

While I haven't experienced a fandom-related death threat, a classmate once said to his friends, right in front of me: "She'll (meaning me) be that kid who brings a knife to school and kills somebody." Just because I was socially awkward and consequently a bit angst-ridden. Not a death threat, but pretty much on the same level, and definitely not enjoyable. Or forgettable, unfortunately.

Um, yeah, this doesn't sound like a secret. If OP is so honest about shit and "owning opinions", then I bet they've said the same thing to tons of people before. Probably here at FS too.
