Here's hoping they work out any issues they might have through the fictional characters, and save you some stress down the line.

I've said this before, but I wish my mom was still around, because she would have loved to see gay characters on soaps.

I hope your mum turns out to be fine with it!

I can definitely understand your concern.

On the plus side, maybe a positive gay storyline will help some of them become a little more openminded.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Hon, they have done gay stories lines on soaps before. Days is just late to the party.

Besides, there are a lot of gay soap fans!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hon, they have done gay storylines on soaps before and then blamed poor ratings on the gay storyline. It's a legitimate concern. Days may be late to the party, but it will be one of only two soaps with current gay storylines on the air (the other being Bianca on All My Children, which is going off the air in a few months), so it's not like there's this plethora of gay soap characters and that Days is lagging behind. I wish that was the case.

Oh wow, you're seriously worried they'd cancel Days of Our Lives? Like such a thing is even possible

And wasn't there a gay romance on As the World Turns fairly recently or did I hallucinate that news story?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
they've been canceling soaps left and right lately. days was even seriously up on the chopping block and was only renewed until 2013 so it's very possible it could get axed eventually. atwt and amc both had/have longterm gay characters though.

that being said, days is way late to the game when it comes to having gay characters. it's about time.

OP a lot of the older soap fans can be asshat homophobes but there is a large amount of gay soap viewers out there. i imagine when the storyline airs they'll have articles and threads about it on afterelton and you could hang out with a lot of likeminded people there. i'd avoid the usual soap forums though. they're not nice. i can vouch for that with the current amc bianca/marissa storyline.

You didn't hallucinate, it was a couple of years ago (Luke/Noah) and ended when the show was cancelled. One Live To Live</>) also did a gay love story, and All My Children had a lesbian couple. I have a feeling OP sees that ATWT, AMC and OLTL have all be cancelled and thinks those stories contributed to the decision. :-(

American soaps are seriously on the decline at the moment - four long running shows have been cancelled in the last three years alone - and Days is the last soap left on NBC, so I think it's actually pretty well possible that it could be canceled. I don't think it'll be canceled purely because of a gay storyline, but the blame will certainly be there just as it has been on several other soaps with gay storylines which were canceled.

Daytime dramas are not the only choice of entertainment anymore for people at home during the afternoon. There are hundreds of cable/satellite channels and people can watch literally anything either there or on their computers or on Netflix. Soaps only ever existed as vehicles for manufacturers selling home products, anyway - if they can advertise those elsewhere, on higher-rated programs or reruns, the soaps won't be needed very much. (And All My Children was canceled and it was also a long-running show, so ... yeah.)

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hey good on Days, that used to be my soap, and like you I watched it from when I was little. That damn show is an institution, I don't see it getting cancelled over this.

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Guiding Light went off the air with scarcely a blip after running for 72 years (it started as a radio drama).

If Days gets canceled, it won't be over a controversial storyline but rather from viewer attrition (it was noted that the prime audience for soaps was comprised of stay-at-home wives, of which there are far fewer).

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. There have been several soaps that were institutions that have been cancelled in the last three years alone. Guiding Light and As The World Turns were both on longer than Days of Our Lives, and both were cancelled. I don't know where people get this idea that Days is so ~untouchable~ or something.

If Days gets canceled, it won't be over a controversial storyline but rather from viewer attrition (it was noted that the prime audience for soaps was comprised of stay-at-home wives, of which there are far fewer).

I totally agree, although if it gets canceled many people will, I'm sure, blame it on a controversial storyline, just as many people blamed the decline in One Life To Live's ratings on their gay storyline.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh sure I'm sure Days will end at some point, just not over this. It's a shame GL didn't get more fanfare when it ended. Soaps get no respect and while they are a bit silly, people still work hard on them.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't they have some gay characters/plot lines in "As the World Turns" and it went pretty good for the show? I've never seen it, so I don't know the fandom's reaction.

Though, seeing how daytime Soaps are dying right now, it may get cancelled anyway, just for how it is becoming obsolete.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
A gay character/plot != you. Nor do reactions to said plot !=reactions to you.

[completely unrelated] Every time I see/hear 'Days of Our Lives' mentioned I giggle that it spells out DOOL. I'm such a child sometimes XD

I hope they warm up to it and don't rage quit. I completely understand about an older audience not getting shit or being close-minded. Half my family is this way... They refuse to be educated and continue to make their opinions. Maybe if it's integrated into their favourite soap it could change some perceptions. Here's hoping. ^^
