Do we have the same doctor? I told mine I thought I had trichtillomania and even showed him the small "bald spot" I'd recently pulled out. He looked at me weird and said "why would you do that? Just stop. That's silly"

Ugh. If I could stop, I wouldn't have a small spot on my head that's missing hair!!

He's also the same doctor who told me to "smile a bit more" when I told him I think I have depression. :(

Get a new doctor or go straight to a psychiatrist, that's really not acceptable.

Your doctor is a fucking moron. Drop him immediately.

The 'just stop' thing is stupid, but the 'smile your depression away' thing could kill you.

This.

I can't help but wonder if said doctor is on the elderly side, because I notice that kind of attitude is more prevalent in older generations (not all the time, of course). I know a lot of older people who think the cure for depression is "a little bit of sunshine". Yeeeaaaah.

I don't think we have the same doctor, but that does seem like the same attitude. I can fill in my eyebrow with make-up, but I'm more concerned about when I'm not thinking and start fiddling with my eyebrows around my friends or in public. I wish I could stop that.

It's a symptom of anxiety so I guess I just need to keep my hands busy.

Yeah, the keeping hands busy works for me too (except now I yank the skin from around my nails instead). But I have eyebrows again!

I'm sorry you have such a terrible doctor :( And I hope you can find a more understanding one

It always makes me really sad when I hear about doctors acting like that. I'm pretty sure they have to take several psychology courses and have decent bedside manner to become doctors. You would think having tact about things like this would be a no-brainer. I guess some just become jaded or out of touch

The first doctor I talked to was the same, I eventually found one who WAS ACTUALLY WILLING TO TREAT ME and things have been a lot better.

Try checking out Help For Hair Pullers, it's a really useful book for coping with trich.
