mte. i also hate that so many people here seem to think calling the suicide hotline would have somehow magically fixed things for the friend. i went through depression and i had somebody call the hotline for me. and you know what? it did nothing to help me. if anything, it made me feel worse that some random stranger on the other end of a phoneline seemed to think they knew about my problems and how to 'fix' them. i know it was an irrational way to think, but i couldn't help it.

so perhaps the op was doing what s/he thought was right. by sharing something s/he loved with a friend in an attempt to make them feel better and let them know that s/he is there for them. sometimes just knowing you have a friend who cares about you and wants to help you is enough to pull you back from the edge.
