WONT SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHRISTIANS?!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-16 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Won't someone consider everyone with respect and dignity? Most Christians are not how the media portrays them in fiction and on the news. Your average Christian goes about their day like anyone else and believes that it's necessary to show every person kindness and compassion. Like any other group in the world, there are extremists. That's because no one is perfect. But all those who insist on behaving like every Christian is exactly like every other Christian is only encouraging the problem. You wouldn't mock someone for being a woman or for being black or for being homosexual (and I think homosexuals are by far the most unfairly exploited of any group among fandom, but that's another conversation entirely). You shouldn't mock someone for being Goth, prep, emo, or a geek, even though that happens from school on through adult years. You don't see this kind of mockery against Muslims and various other religious groups? Why, therefore, is it okay to mock Christians? Is it just that you like having something to unite against?

I'm not even very religious. I'm just tired of the hypocrisy, is all. Why can't we all stop acting like assholes?

You can like what you like and believe what you believe. But don't be a dick about it.

Yeah I know about christians, coming from a christian family and such. Shocking, I know.

You do realise that you can consider people with respect and still make fun of them? No? No wonder you get your panties in a twist like that.

Besides you should remember that unlike women, blacks and homosexuals christians are not an oppressed group. In fact they have been oppressor for quite a long time so fuck that argument. They're good sport because besides a few frail feelings hurt there is no damage done by portraying them in an exaggerated manner. You act like a specific christian has been targeted and somehow is discriminated or made fun of and that is bullshit.

Why should you want to engage in behavior that might hurt -any- feelings, frail or otherwise? Why does this have to become high school, where in order to maintain your own clique, you mock everyone not like you? Wouldn't that just continue a vicious cycle? If you hurt someone's feelings, they're more likely to lash out at you. Non-Christians suddenly become the exact stereotype they expect from Christians, and the Christians are suddenly their own stereotype. And even if a group of Christians came out and wildly oppressed you, it wouldn't make it right to do it right back. There's an old saying out there. What is it now? Something about two wrongs and what they don't make. I'll think of it eventually. I'm just tired of seeing Christians as one of the most mocked group of people on Fandom Secrets.

Next to Conservatives, of course, but that's hardly a worthwhile argument to get into.

If someone doesn't get their panties into a twist about it, no one will. There's too many of you, and the Christians are too afraid. I guess maybe I just like arguing enough to stand up and ruin your fun.

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2011-07-17 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I see the christians all afraid up in this thread. Laughing about the secret - I guess it's laughter of fear.

Seriously I'll not lose sleep over someone getting hurt over a joke about their religion. You seem to think that someone is actively trying to make christians feel bad or something. The secret was just about finding something funny and sharing the thought. If in your book thinking of christians as jesus/god fans is hurtful and vile... well, really, can't help it can't care.

Don't worry, you're not ruining my fun and I'm quite honestly amused that you think you're some kind of hero. You're taking yourself and this topic way to seriously - which may be part of why you think it's vicious to joke about religion.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-17 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just tired of how often people seem to joke about Christianity, and of how they're portrayed in fiction and on the news as mindless, uneducated, brain-washed, and usually villainous individuals. Watch any episode of Law and Order that features a Christian and you'll see. Change has to start somewhere. And maybe it should start with the average person's attitude. But I suppose if I don't seem like a person that can take a little teasing, you don't seem like the kind of person that can analyze your own thoughts and actions.

I don't think it's vicious to joke about religion. I just think it's vicious to do it continuously. There's such a thing as carrying a joke too far, and Fandom Secrets keeps pushing it over and over again. It's one thing when it's about a TV show or a book or a movie. It's quite another when it's something untold number of people believe. For a lot of people, Christianity isn't fiction.

Okay I'll really stop here now because I will NOT argue with someone that thinks christians are discriminated against.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-17 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I just hope people learn to examine what they say and how they say it, no matter who they're talking about or whether or not they think they deserve it.
