I love this manga because of the character development, but sometimes I agree with you. On the other hand, Negi wouldn't be nearly as cute if he was older.

Yeah, I sometimes get that feeling too- not only do I feel that Negima could have been a big shounen fighting hit (a la Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho) if not for the squicky stuff, I also feel like it could have been a bigger success in the moe/harem genre if not for the shounen battles! As it is, Negima just kind of hovers between two worlds. Apparently it's successful both in the USA and Japan, but there's not much in terms of a creative FANBASE in either country.

You'd think it'd be a shoo-in for a big fandom though since it has a zillion characters many of whom do not have a lot of characterization, which seems to be the "big thing" in anime fandoms these days. (To latch onto fandoms where the characterization is very superficial and append huge headcanons in its stead: see Hetalia, Pokemon, Vocaloid...)

I love Negima, truly. And it is unfortunate that it still has the harem wrapper stuck to it. The story (or so I've read) is that Ken Akamatsu wanted to do a fantasy fighting manga but his editors at Shounen Magazine wanted to cash in on what he is most famous for: fanservice-filled romcoms in the vein of Love Hina and AI Love You. So Akamatsu started out with a harem set up... and gradually upped the action/adventure plot to the point where the harem elements are sort of backdrop. It really is not a harem series anymore. It is a fantasy/action/fighting/adventure manga with harem tropes and fanservice. But it has so many cool girl characters in it that I can't help but love it.

I heard somewhere that the writer wanted it to just be magic battles, but his editors forced him to shove harem shit in it because of how well Love Hina did.
