okay, i'm a little fuzzy on the details bc he's offline now and it was a few weeks ago he told me but the basic gist is this: alto & brera disappear at the end of the battle, but the manga ends with of sheryl & ranka standing in a deserted chapel in wedding dresses. and then in the sky--he described them as "birds" but i'm unsure if this is an exact description of what appears on the page or if he was romanticizing-figures appear that are heavily implied to be alto & brera returning at last for sheryl & ranka respectively.

It's Brera/Ranka lipservice. The manga comes with them dressed as ambiguous bride & bridegroom poster to match the plainly canon Alto&Sheryl wedding poster.

There is shoujo ai. The girl-villain forces a kiss on Ranka.

There is a Vajra infection Alto and Brera need to stop before its spread across the universe, they don't think they can make it for sure.

Alto confesses his love for Sheryl and snogs her before the battle. Brera and Ranka have a romantic if ambiguous scene to mirror this. He kisses her forehead and gives her his harmonica while she blushes brightly.

They go off to battle. Then there is a time skip with Sheryl and Ranka dressed as brides, waiting for someone in the chapel. The priest arrives and mentions he sees two big birds flying high up the sky.
