Woah, this looks like my kind of movie just based on that picture. I hesitate to wikipedia it because of spoilers... would anyone mind giving me a super brief idea of what it's about?

It's a loosely based on the life of female philosopher/teacher/astronomer Hypatia. But her life story might have spoilers too. It's set in Alexandria basically deals with upcoming Christianity, clash of cultures, and it's basically a set-up to how we got back to the middle ages, with knowledge lost (the destruction of the library of Alexandria is part of the film - and really, that alone was enough to make my blood boil). It also focuses on the difficulties of being an intelligent non-religious woman at that time, and also touches upon issues like slavery. i'm sorry, it's hard not to bee to spoiler-ful. It's a great movie, but terribly sad and infuriating.

Yeah, to me that was actually the worst part - though, there really are many parts that just make me want to punch something. (like the very subtle, clever indoctrination tactics) - but I'll spoil no more.

OH WOW I didn't know it was about Hypatia! I saw the posters when I was in London last year, but totally forgot about the movie. As religious as I am, she's got a great story, I'm happy they made it into a movie.

I'd honestly recommend that you read up on Hypatia rather than watching the movie, because I found it to largely be a horrible bastardization of her life story, much more focused on male characters and religious issues in Alexandria in the period. Those are actually pretty interesting, but in a movie that's supposed to be about this incredibly cool ancient female philosopher, they just get very jarring.

But I like male characters and religious issues. I don't really care very much if the material about Hypatia is accurate, I just like good movies. I wouldn't watch any historical movies if all I cared about was if they got all the facts right.
