I'm not claiming to know what it's like to be in that situation, but abuse can put the mind in a very screwed-up place. People rationalize things. Humans have a weird way of coping with things, which is why you see people blocking out traumatic memories sometimes, large parts of their life, just to deal with it, as an example.

She could've been put into a pretty fucked up mindset where her stepfather asked awful things of her for plenty of other stuff, and this was just the way things were for her. Not saying that's what it is - I'm just trying to explain a possible situation. She sounds like she was pretty young, too - and kids don't know any better, you know?

Either way it sounds like an awful experience. I'm sorry, OP, that you had to go through that, and have to endure reminders like this in your everyday life.
