And I think it's dickish and rude when HP fans are shocked that I say it wasn't my cup of tea and then argue with me about it, throwing all these different points at me to try to force me to acknowledge its awesomeness. And yes, this has happened to me: HP fans I didn't even know trying to beat the love of HP into me.

Not all non-fans are saints, I'll admit that, but not all fans are perfect either.

That, I'll admit, is just as bad. It's kind of a mutual thing with me - let me be a fangirl when the moment strikes, and I'll temper my enthusiasm around someone who isn't as big into it as me. I'm not about to go ZOMG YOU'RE AWFUL HDU NOT WATCH OR READ POTTER. |D

From what I've seen you're a rarity in the HP fandom. To be honest, I'm indifferent toward it -- I don't care for it but I'm not going to be an asshole to the people who are calm fans. It's the fans that run around screaming like goddamn fucking maniacs insulting anyone who hasn't loved HP as much and as long as they have while typing in the largest fonts possible about how much they cried during the last movie and how their life is now over that get on my nerves.

You have your fandoms, and I have my own. It's only fair that I let you enjoy yours while at the same time you let me enjoy my own. It's just that simple.

This exactly! I'm a huge Potterphile, it was a huge part of my childhood and something I grew up with. Does that mean everyone else is required to like it? Hell no. That's the nifty thing about everyone being different; we all have different tastes and enjoy different things. Shoving your likes down someone's throat is just going to make them DISlike it all the more.

I hate to say it, but there's a reason I've never been all that involved in the internet aspect of the Potter fandom - most of my fangirling has been limited to stuff with my sister, the media for the film, Tumblr, and just... I don't know, "private fandom"? The Potter fandom is fucking insane, and while I can understand the passion for the series, the internet fandom at large scares me shitless because some try to convert non-Potter fans to it like they're fucking missionaries for Hogwarts.

If I had been born a few years later or earlier, the chances that I could have gotten into the series are significantly lower. I happened to have been at the right age range to feel a greater appreciation for the characters and series. I don't know of many diehard Potter fans above the age of thirty, though that's not to say that they don't exist. I think a lot of the passion comes from having grown up (literally) with the series. It's not quite the same if you didn't.

I really hate that. While I think HP was brilliant, there will always be people that just didn't enjoy it for whatever reason, and I don't get why some of the fans feel personally insulted if someone didn't have the same love for it. If their opinion doesn't affect anyone but themselves, and they're not trying to convince the fans to dislike it, why should other people care at all?

Joking aside, I also agree with what you said about fans in general. Even in my fandoms I've seen some people who I feel take it a little too seriously. On the other hand, they're not being rude about it to me or anyone else and not breaking any community rules by posting about it. So I just scroll past it and read the posts that I do want to read.
