I suppose it'd be different if I had grown up with the books, but I read them in my mid-teens.

I think this is a key point here. Most of the people I personally have encountered saying the rest of us are being overemotional weren't children when they read the books. My friends and I were eight when we started reading the books and we all feel incredibly attached to the series because it was a huge part of our childhood.
I can get why someone wouldn't be as attached if they read HP when they were older, but people like that need to remember that there's a whole demographic out there of people who were just about the perfect age when the Potter craze hit and it's a really big deal for them.

I'm not saying you can't be overemotional right now because it is sad, but a reality check will come along. The rest of us who didn't grow up with the books grew up with other things. The things I remember were Disney Afternoon (Tale Spin, Chip 'N Dale, Ducktales, etc.), New MMC, ABC TGIF (Boy Meets World, Sabrina), and Saved by the Bell to name a few. They've all come and gone. I might have been upset at the time, but I've since moved on and the Harry Potter generation will too. ;)

I'm more concerned with the die hard fans that overreact tbh. The ones that are adamant that "Harry Potter will never die." Yes, he's not going anywhere, but the fandom will dwindle down and people will move on. They're not traitors or turning their backs on the series. It's over. People move on. They shouldn't get so uptight if someone is finished with it. They'll remember it and reminisce, but it's pretty well done. :/

I just want to say that everything you've said here is totally spot on. I was 16/17 when the first book came out and 20 when the first movie came out. It's not part of my childhood, so I don't have the attachment. There have been so many other fandoms that wax and wane, and HP is no different from any of them. I'm pretty hardcore into LOTR and have been since '02. I'm still here. The fandom has been around since at least the 50s/60s, and it will be here long after we're here. Tolkien's been dead since 1973 - if LOTR people can survive, they can too.

I guess my point is - HP will be with people in their hearts and minds, where all fictitious characters exist. People are always overly dramatic when current canon ends. They can write fic and JKR can have her new projects and such, but otherwise, eventually they'll have to get used to the idea that it's over.
