But surely, if you're humorous and creative, those traits can also translate into real life situations?

Your icon is so adorable!

Thank you, it's the logo for a local festival here :)

[identity profile] clau019.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh really? What's the festival about?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
It's like a week-long event with free live bands, street theatre, people in constumes - a whole bunch of stuff. But look here if interested: http://www.gentsefeesten.be/.
Clinch on "EN" for the English version.

Thanks!

I know that feel bro

Well, minus the "good at it" part.

I definitely get this (sometimes I wish I could bring up my fic more IRL without risking looking "weird").

But I also think everything we do and learn can end up being relevant elsewhere. There are some obvious ways that fandom participation can transfer over to real life, like producing original creative works. And I'm sure there are less direct ways, too.

It kind of is a skill that could translate to something else if you could hit on the right thing.

Not exactly the same thing but I recently started getting paid designing flyers and stuff for work because I'm the only person who knows how to use Photoshop. Which I only learned to use because I was making Charmed icons in year seven or something.

So... assume that everything you do and learn and excel at in life will come back to help you at some stage. It just might.

I've just started getting paid for the writing skills I've honed with years of fanfic. It wasn't something I'd ever planned on, but someone else in my life noticed that I wrote well and offered to pay me for it. Now I've got the start of a professional writing portfolio.

Stranger things have happened, OP, and the world has a big appetite for humor and entertainment. You might be surprised.

I don't know what kind of thing you're good in fandom shit, OP, but I tell you something: As a designer, people started to hire me more times since I started to show my fanwork in my portifolio (specially my fanmix cover arts). And I think this applies to every kind of thing you may do. If you do funny, cleaver fandom jokes, you can use it in a portifolio to aply for a job in marketing, they're always looking for people with good taste for comedy. If you're good at editing images, well, show it all and you might get good jobs as designer. If you're good at writing, well, the possibilities are endless. And list goes on. People look for creative people, no matter what they do with their talents. And using creativity to put your fandom work to show what you're good at might even surprise whoever is hiring you: It shows you're interessed and well informed. It's always good, and I can tell you something, I've already gained lots of money in real life jobs thanks to fandom material.

So good luck.
