it was still a pretty douchey thing to do in a group competition...

I agree anon. The fact that they were barely prepared probably didn't help their chances... who writes a competition song at the last possible minute?

[identity profile] tenonthedot.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, I cannot agree with this more. I've done some competitive dancing before, and it annoys me so much when they get on stage and jump around, then expect to win.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
My biggest complaint, haha. When Will was like "Alright guys, let's write the song we'll be performing tomorrow" that was just. Ridiculous.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking this. They should have had that song written and been drilling the choreography months previous.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Who thinks that?! How about the fact that they prepared in, like, two days and weren't very good? I laughed my head off when they didn't make the top ten. They didn't deserve to. And I know for the show it wouldn't work, but why are we pretending that they're not allowed to perform any other song they've ever done ever before?

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one that laughed. I mean they've never even been remotely close to how actual show choirs are, but they were pushing the limits of how far I could suspend my disbelief last season.

[identity profile] twitchy-bunnies.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
MTE. Any team that actually believes they have a shot in hell at placing at Nationals - Nationals - with only hours of practice and songs that were composed at the very last minute is delusional. I was laughing too when they realized they didn't make it.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
They wrote their songs like a day before the competition. That's why they lost, but that unprofessional makeout session could not have helped. I can't believe they made the top twenty.

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was really disappointed that the show seemed to have all the characters accept the idea that that's why they lost. So they'll still have those two do a duet next year for the big competition.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, but it certainly didn't help them. Regardless of how they would have fared in the case of not-snogging, it was a terribly, terribly unprofessional thing to do.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I have this whole rant I want to deliver to the characters (well, on multiple topics, but we're talking the kiss here) on the subject - yeah, okay, maybe the kiss cost them a point or two but what killed them was not just their lack of preparation (though that was a big part) was that the judges would hear that New Directions had original songs, see this diverse group, and expect something to reflect that. Instead, they got the bubble gum pop style songs that the group performed at Regionals with a few alterations and different lyrics. They didn't lose because of a kiss (hell, the performers being swept up in the moment might even have actually worked in their favor because it meant that they were singing with such passion), they lost because, once more, they played only to Finn and Rachel's strengths and not the group's as a whole. Wasn't that the point of the two taking a backseat at Sectionals?

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
therein lies the major problem of Glee as a whole: introduce an interesting, intelligent plot point, build it for an episode, forget it ever existed.

[identity profile] wottie.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I just find it astounding that anyone, even Finn, could be ~caught up in the moment~ after singing the terrible and last-minute lyrics of that song.

But uh, also I agree with this secret.

[identity profile] coffeeandfrogs.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who's been to a show choir competition on the national level, I'm appalled that RIB even expected anyone to believe that you could win a competition with songs written two days before. Forget about the fact that you have to submit a set list before.

Ugh. So much FAIL.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure the other groups were just better. The kiss was put in to cause tension, so the rest of ND would think they fucked it up.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
It was unprofessional, self-centered and certainly didn't help their chances..

But their loss was by writing their songs the day before they performed them. I never did choir competitions, but I've done band contest as well as solo contest, and we prepared for months, not hours.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my choir (regular choir, not show choir, but still) would practice for months, and we weren't practicing several different songs each and every week. If we weren't going to perform it, it wasn't practiced.

And, yes, I know, if they did that, it would mean that the group would be singing the same songs each week, but, here's a marvelous idea - let's take the characters OUT of the classroom and make the song sequences in their heads or just after school practices, so that we can at least pretend that they're practicing and perfecting the songs in the time leading to the performances?

Why is it that with only maybe a small percentage of thought, I can come up with better ways of doing things than the actual writers? *buries head in hands*

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah; my band would do some other things (for concerts, usually, since you need more than two songs) and occasionally sight-read pieces if we needed a breather from our contest pieces (when it got to that point where people stopped trying out of boredom). But yeah, largely we just did what we were going to do.

I think I die a little inside when Will does his "this is your assignment for the week" or "we need to figure stuff out for regionals lol" because it's never going to be used. It's especially blatant now that they're writing their songs, because that takes effort to do, and not everyone will know the song (unlike doing a popular song)

Sometimes I wonder if they're making Will a bad choir director on purpose. But I doubt that.

I love people in the comments complaining about a lack of realism in Glee, apparently these people have never actually seen Glee before because it's really not realistic.
