I hope there was a good reason for people donating that 30k because it's kinda depressing that actual online charities struggle to even raise that much in a few days.

I checked and yeah, they guy was basically going to be homeless if he didn't get that much money

I can't really fault fans of a comic for keeping their favorite author off the streets, but shit like the LiCD animated series pilot making 75k USD in a few weeks is another story entirely

I don't know the person in the secret but this makes me kind of feel sad. My good friend needs a lot of money to save her family, a lot more than she can get on her own. Maybe if she had a big talent and a devoted fan-base she'd have hope too.

[identity profile] donotthrowsouls.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I can relate to that feeling

I can't decide if this guy is really talented or really lucky and I'm sure it's a little of each

Honestly people connect to webcomic creators a lot easier than they do random charity A-Z. You "know" the person who will benefit from your money and are more willing to open your wallet.. It's how webcomics work.

It's not that much different than a person having a kid with an illness suddenly caring about said illness.

Even though I didn't donate to him this time around, it makes me happy and proud that I'm part of that fandom and that he's so supported by his fans. And I'm glad he'll be able to buy his house now.

[identity profile] weekendoffender.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm glad he'll be able to buy his house now.

They raised money so a guy could buy a house?! That's fucking ridiculous!

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
It was a bit more complicated then that. I don't remember all the details, but the place he was leasing was originally going to become his at x time, and then his landlady changed her mind and was going to sell it then. So if he didn't get the money, he was gone.

Other issues you might still have about him and or internet charities, it wasn't just "gimmie money so I can buy house."

[identity profile] weekendoffender.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, still rubs me entirely the wrong way. Mainly because most of the people who donated money wouldn't even look at a homeless person.

I mean, 30 grand?! There's a good chance that dude could have rented another place. He obviously had the money the lease the house he was in, so he wasn't flat broke. Do you think these donators would raise 30 grand for a homeless shelter?

Sorry, not actually ranting at you. Just ranting because this just pissed me off.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the thing is, that doesn't make him homeless. All that means is that he would *gasp* have to find a new place to rent and come up with a new game plan!

Seriously, the secret actually points out why those who donate to webcomic artists make me lose FAITH in humanity. That putting a little bit of a face on something makes people fall all over themselves to donate 38k just so a guy doesn't have to look on craigslist for places to live, while there's people actually STARVING in America right now. Jesus Christ fanthings. Get some perspective.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-23 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ain't none of your business what people do with the money they earn.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna respectfully disagree. The stupid thing I've seen fans contribute money towards have actually made me more upset than anything else. We won't share our money with people in need, but god damn we'll help some guy not have to go through the awkward discomfort of moving, or we'll throw 75k as a misogynistic webcomic creator to create an incredibly shitty animated cartoon. Whereas shit like Octopus Pie languishes so much that the creator has had to take a day job, we toss money at the fucking Goblin dude just because he got into a situation that is not too uncommon but for some reason is some HUGE DEAL.

Mostly it reminds me that ultimately, there's a lot of people with really bad taste, too much disposable income and absolutely no sense of perspective.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
it's seriously making me consider whipping up my own shitty webcomic. i struggle to pay rent every fortnight. if i'd known that all i need to do is create a webcomic so i can sponge off the fanbase, i would have done it years ago!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-22 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Or we could be paying for art and entertainment. Just like we pay to go to the movies, except this person has allowed us to watch the movie before deciding to pay.

[identity profile] spam-27.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Pfft I think you should argue with them. If someone does something that brings you enjoyment there's no reason not to donate to them to help them out. If my readers individually gave me a dollar a month I would be thrilled.

I think most people are just angry they don't have the supporting fandoms. Or as illustrated by someone above, their favorite comics don't have supporting fandoms.
