Are you implying that everyone who was abused as a child should just suck it up in adulthood? Because those kinds of things never leave lifelong psychological scars, right?

Are you implying that everyone who was ever abused as a child becomes addicted to plastic surgery?

I don't judge him for it, I mean, it sucks that he never got to have a real childhood, but still, it's not normal to get that much plastic surgery, nor is it healthy

I don't think that's what they said at all. Everyone deals with their problems in their own way even if it is self destructive.

There's still a ton of people that get excessive surgery that we may or may not know about. There's people that have eating disorders. There's people that hoard.

Saying someone should just put on their bigboy pants and get over it is obviously someone who's never dealt with that kind of problem.

Well the original post in this thread just said "SORRY BUT THIS IS WHAT NIGHTMARES ARE MADE OF" and I have to agree with that sentiment. I know his obsession with plastic surgery stemmed from childhood trauma, but I'm still repulsed by it, just like I would be repulsed by an image of a woman with anorexia. That doesn't mean that I'm judging that person, just like I don't judge people for having alcoholism or any other number of equally repulsive problems that often stem from childhood trauma. And I do think it does ultimately come down to the individual, nobody else can fix these kinds of self-destructive behaviors. Nobody's saying it's easy or fair.

Exactly. He had emotional problems that resulted in self-destructive behavior. He needed expert help that he didn't get. Obviously no one thinks that the way he chose to deal with his problems was healthy, but he can hardly be faulted for having psychological problems, or expected to have been able to simply grow up and function in normal society despite those problems that he never received treatment for.

Are lifelong scars possible and understandable? Yes. Lifelong bleeding, open wounds? Still possible, not as understandable. I don't think it's unreasonable to at some point expect people to stop blaming the past and start finding a way to take some responsibility for their own lives. Which I don't think is quite the same as saying "You're some magical age now, just suck it all up, all on your own!"

And for what it's worth, I don't recall MJ blaming other people for what his face turned into.

ayrt

When you are that far gone (I mean, come on - Neverland? Bubbles the chimp?), you need more than simply a will to let go of the past and look forward to the future. He needed help. This wasn't a "life is so hard because my father was mean to me" holdover from his teenage years. He was legit nuts, and too deep in his own world to notice it. Nothing short of professional intervention would've gotten him straightened out.

This.

I was never bullied as a child. But I do remember certain offhanded comments people made about my looks over the years. I shouldn't have let it bother me because I know I'm not ugly, but if even one person calls me 'ugly' or said they didn't like my eyes/nose/mouth/etc my brain remembers it for life.

So I couldn't imagine how awful it must have been for MJ to live with that sort of shit every day and night. Especially coming from your own dad (who is clearly just as insane as MJ was...Spruking your CDs just days after your sons death. WTF?) The poor guy needed professional help. The world watched him go deeper and deeper into his bizarre, childlike world, yet nobody wanted to be the one to tell him he needed help.

No, but they might want to consider therapy (and you can't tell me he couldn't have afforested the best) before they rip themselves apart.

I think making money was the worst thing that ever happened to him. When you can get whatever you want and are surronded by people who can't or won't tell you to stop, having real baggage (especially body issues) makes for a perfect cocktail of self-destruction.
