I never said it made him beautiful, I simply wanted to point out that Michael Jackson's surgeries and attempts to improve himself probably had little to do with 'excessive pride' in his appearance. Body dysmorphic disorder is just as likely, and that's kinda like the opposite of vanity (it does still involve being egocentric, but that doesn't change the fact it manifests quite differently and is inherently destructive).

And I have no interest in canonizing the man, but I see no harm in recognizing that many of his flaws had their root in his childhood.

How anyone could think MJ was vain about his appearance is beyond me. I don't think he was ever proud of his looks. If anything, he seemed embarrassed of them and hated talking about himself in any positive light. I don't think he even fully understood why people loved him -and his singing- so much. His father's constant bullshit seemed to have put him in a state of constant defensiveness and shame. :(
