I am still looking for a site, lj, or blog i can follow that has DIFFERENT people's fics and art instead of the "shit all same" pictures and fic recs taht get posted over and over by the same people in the fandom.

I am a TF2 noob (yes, I joined in when it went free-to-play), and I am terrified of playing on a server because I don't want people to be mean to me. The vets can be so horrible about newbies. It's a shame there's so much negativity. I don't blame you, anon.

Try the Free Frag Network servers, in my experience they're always pretty nice and have a good amount of female players, so there's less misogyny than on typical public ones.
I know a good amount of /cm/ TF2 fans play on them as well, and possibly some livejournalers?

I love all of the "Meet the Team" videos, I've spent way too much time looking up fanart and comics, I even have my ships, but I just suck at first person shooters so damn much! Even the jumping aspects of Portal threw me off and I had to get my gamer brother just to finish some of the moves. Definitely know where you're coming from. If it's any consolation, this fandom seems to have tons of lurkers and noobs.

Mmmm I started playing when it became free to play and every time I'm about to join a server I feel really paranoid about it being full of veterans that would kick me before I could take two steps. I'm super afraid to play the classes that I think require more skill like say, Spy or Sniper or Demoman (damn sticky jumping!) and instead focus on Heavy so my decent aim doesn't make me stand out as a noob.

As for the fandom, I've recently started drawing for it and yeah I'm getting some shit, but...
I don't know where I'm going with this, but I feel ya anon, it's not the best fandom to be in.

I think sticking with Heavy or even Medic is probably a good way to hide our noobness. I'm still learning classes like Engie and Spy, and I'm trying to become more comfortable with Sniper. I figure Medic is a great way to be appreciated while getting experience as it seems like you never can have too many on a team.

As the mod, I want to encourage anyone to join and post, regardless of their art/writing style, skill, or amount of time they have played the game.

Yes, you run the risk of people finding your stuff and posting it on Tumbler or somehwere else to else to jeer at, but mocking and "one way" ideas is something I won't allow in the LJ community itself.

If it's any consolation, it took me like, three tries before gathering the cojones to comment on this. Which makes no sense because I'm sure most of the people checking out this thread feel the same way or know what that's like, but whatev. Case in point.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of lurkers, that or most people are really just that into the games and not fandom itself. I don't see a lot of different people throughout, but I'm not actively seeking them out, either, so I might be missing something.

At the moment, I just kind of stick to my own little corner and I'm sorry I can't offer much help. There's some common themes of aggravation that I've noticed, but I don't see why anyone should have to abide by one group's standards. Just remember: Be polite. Be efficient. Have a plan to kill everyone you meet. You shouldn't have too many problems if you treat people decently, like you should in any other fandom.

Hello, new TF2er! Welcome to the ranks of the best FPS ever to put on a silly hat. Here are some protips to make your transition into this admittedly volatile and occasionally caustic fandom a little less traumatic. These are particularly valid on the chan, but apply to other places too.

Protip 1: don't announce your entry into the fandom. Insinuate yourself, like you've always been there.

Protip 2: if people give you crit, accept it gratefully. Not only will it help your art, fic and game to improve, it will also make you look like a Good Person.

Protip 3: don't take insults to heart. Everyone was a noob once, and most of them are just being nasty for the sake of it. If someone gives you stick in-game, call an admin. Most servers have rules about that.

Protip 4: Learn to take your defeats with dignity and your victories with humility. If you don't start drama, drama won't find you.

Protip 5: Your Kink Is Not My Kink (And That's Okay). There is some strange stuff out there, and your browser has a back button for a reason.

Protip 6: for gods' sake, remember you're playing a game where hitting people with half a bottle of scrumpy can make them explode. It's not serious business.
