Or it's entirely possible that it would have been more popular if there hadn't already been a huuuuge number of fans who read Lupin as being coded as gay gay gay (even if they didn't ship him with Sirius) and didn't buy the pairing at all.

I mean, hell, when POA came out that didn't exactly hurt the number of Lupin/Sirius shippers out there, regardless of how attractive or not Thewlis is. IIRC, it was a massive pairing at the time and I distinctly remember a hell of a lot of icons of Thewlis and Oldman.

Yeah, besides Tonks/Lupin sort of came from nowhere and they were so different that few people shipped them before that moment in the infirmary. It was usually Bill/Tonks or Charlie/Tonks.

I wouldn't say it came out of nowhere; from what I can tell it was the most popular het ship for Remus before it was canon. I wasn't active in fandom at that time, but I know I shipped it hard after OOTP.

People were shipping them as soon as Tonks appeared. Fan favorite guy + attractive-in-a-relatable-way twenty something gal? Yeah.

But it would have been bigger if they'd done more than be in the same room at the same time once or twice on page. It would have slowed down the juggernaught R/S ship too if the T/R ship hadn't been kept secret until the next book.

Pretty much all of this. I think I would have supported R/T a lot more if it hadn't seemed like such a completely unfounded pairing.

Hell, Thewlis played Remus like a gay addict, so clearly it wasn't just a few fans who made an apparently incorrect assumption about his orientation.

Eh, the ship has shippers enough. And the movie did better by them by not shoehorning in all the wangst. But then, since they bothered to keep it and Tonks in, why didn't they let her shine more? She was just... there. Doing nothin' but dying.

I need to see the movie again. Does she have that flaglooking outfit on in the movie? It's just bizarre looking.

Not alone! Thewlis is hot - particularly once the wardrobe people got rid of the caterpillar tash and went with stubble and goatees. Yum!

Remus/Tonks felt like a case of "Shit, I don't want to kill Arthur... who else is a dad? No one? Okay, who's single that I can hook up? Ah ha - Remus and Tonks!" It felt shoehorned in for the sake of completing a plot point and it turned Remus into an ass and Tonks into Bella Swan.

This. So much.

Oh Lordy, that 'stach. I agree; from the fifth movie onwards I was smitten.

Remus IS hot. Tonks on the other hand, just look at her. And I'm saying this as a person who likes unconventional and androgyny looking women. But Tonks is just plain U-G-L-Y.

Or made them both men. Seems like most people hate them because it gets in the way of Sirius/Lupin.

If I had to ship anyone it would be them or Harry/Luna. I'm just not much of a shipper.

I don't think the actress they picked for Tonks is ugly - without the godawful mullet she'd be quite pretty. I just don't think she looks AT ALL like Tonks.

I will never understand why people keep asserting that the actor who plays Lupin is not attractive. And besides, Lupin's not supposed to be a hunk. He's supposed be haggard and woobie-ish, not Hugh Jackman.
