I'm pretty sure all the ponies do.

I think they're doing a Winnie the Pooh type thing. Where each character is meant to portray some sort of mental illness as a challenge to help them grow.

I didn't get that vibe at all, but I suppose it's a possibility?

Whoa. This Winnie the Pooh thing is a brand new theory to me, and I'm not sure I'm buyin'. Sure, the characters are all very extreme in one way or another, but it's all Christopher Robin's exaggerated imagination, considering he's a child as well as the entire work being meant for an audience of children. Still, very interesting.
