no...and yes? like i said, it's the 25th anniversary series, so it is jammed with homages and allusions and all sorts of insider stuff, but it can also be viewed completely as a stand alone. if you've got time on your hands and don't want to dive right into it, i would watch Macross: Do You Remember Love? (the fabulous movie version of the first Macross series) and Macross Zero, a 5 episode OVA prequel to DYRL?, because those are the two series most plot related ones it draws upon, but you could definitely just start with Frontier and then work your way through the back canon, and then re-watch Frontier and appreciate much of it on a different level.

I think I'll watch Frontier and then work my way through the back canon and do a rewatch aftewards. Reading/watching/hearing something twice and appreciating it both times but on different levels is actually one of my greatest pleasures reading/watching/hearing things in general.

ahhhhhhhhhhh i'm glad. is it creepy if i friend you? i just want to know what you end up thinking of it--macross is one of my favorite fictional universes, and frontier is probably my favorite of the macross series, and i haven't found many other people who've watched it.

That would certainly be all right! I'll probably start watching at some point in August. I'm visiting a friend late in the month and I think it sounds like something that she'd really enjoy too so I'm going to watch at least some of it with her.
