[The Coldfire Trilogy]

[identity profile] unavalible.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? I thought it was pretty damn obvious, and so does 90% of the fandom. I honestly can't believe she did not see her own subtext. Pretty much the entire book was dependent on the relationship between Damien and Gerald, and to not see the homo-eroticism just flabbergasted me. Especially in the first book when Tarrant is going to 'feed' from Damien. I mean, come on!

Also, I love that there is a Coldfire secret. Adore these books <3

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
...because that kind of kinship is only representative of sexuality/romance.

Seriously, it's shit like this that make slashers look bad. Quit it.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Have you read the books? Because one of the key things is that normally Gerald only feeds off, well, young pretty women that he finds attractive. So when he creates a permanent bond to feed off Damien, that's not exactly brotherly.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding the 'read the books'. The OP's a abbreviated version doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of why the pairing is a little... suggestive, to say the least.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's not kinship, it's attraction. Did you seriously miss that?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-01 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
To each their own. But I always hate the "misinterpreting" argument. I'm sorry, if you're going to hell to save somebody, that's some deep emotion right there. And if somebody wants to interpret that as romantic and use that evidence to support a pairing, I for one think that's a better reflection on slashers than creating a pairing just because "OMG they look so hawt together!!111"

WOAH. I remember that cover! I got that book from the library a loooong time ago and never returned it, lol (and yes, I got it 100% for the awesome cover). I should try reading it sometime!

It's really a great series, but I'll tell you what I tell everyone I rec it to: it starts really slowly. The first 100-150 pages (at least of the paperback) kind of clog along and you have to push through them. It doesn't really pick up until they leave the city. But once I got through that first section, I basically finished the book in a day and immediately went and got the second, after which I immediately went and got the third.

...I admit. I'm sort of surprised. Not shocked, but that seems like the sort of thing you probably notice.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't intentional? Eff me sideways, I'd'a never guessed.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that has me floored. Even moreso because Friedman, in her other works, has never been one to shy away from alternative relationships. I was sure it was intentional.

Those two must be really, really good friends, I guess. The kind of good friends that get mistaken for a couple when they go out together.

I have a new book series to look into. Thanks for making this secret :D

[identity profile] lykomancer.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Coldfire and her newest trilogy The Magister Trilogy are both excellent series. I personally find that the first novel drags a bit, as she tends to do a lot of exposition, backstory, and weigh down the action with stuff that doesn't make sense to the reader...yet. And then in the second books, the series gears up, everything falls into place, and in the third, I start marveling what an incredible writer she is that she planned so many details crucial to the plot out so specifically.

Yeah.

[identity profile] lykomancer.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
COLDFIRE! Man, I love that series. I don't care if she didn't do it on purpose or not. The subtext is still there.

[identity profile] darlas-mom.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
...I own this series and have never read it. Now I kinda want to. Thanks, OP. :-)

It depends how clueless you are

I distinctly remember being really confused by Oggy and the Cockroaches, because I couldn't work out if Oggy was a boy or a girl. My siblings and I had deep discussions of which it was, because Oggy seemed to be written as a boy and go to the boys' toilet, but then he and Jack seemed to be living together like a married couple and have a romantic relationship. So which was it? Maybe he was neither? Maybe he switched from story to story?

I distinctly remember reading my Bible, reading about King David, as a teenager who had just recently learnt that gay was a thing. I had this whole "oh, that's what's going on" thing with David and Johnathan, exactly like when I reread the story of the woman who had been 'bleeding for years' in the Gospel a couple of years after starting my period :P You can completely miss the most obvious things if you aren't really aware of them.

I then, in my very first forays into internet forums, mentioned this whole "David and Johnathan" thing: I experienced my first flaming, since it turned out this was a well-known, widely mentioned thing, and some other people were not happy about this.

Oh, books not to read to a small child for the first time since you were very small, and now know much more about the world: "Mr and Mrs Pig's Evening Out". Read it without the child first, or the realisation will make it hard to read it properly.

I kind of feel this way about Robin Hobb and the recent *Fool* trilogy. Parts of it read *exactly* like a slashfic, yet she went way over the top insisting it wasn't there.....
