Your love for your beloved is absolutely adorable. And I definitely see your point. Besides, it's a bit silly to write off an entire character as emotionless. Emotions aren't as simple as that...

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for your kindness, and I absolutelly agree. Emotions are complex, and they appear in different ways in everyone. There's no way of labeling it.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
*shrug* people tend to see things from their perspectives, and don't bother thinking about other ways of being except theirs. It's a thing.Point of references on how people feel tend to come from how we experience our own feelings. It's why people that aren't neurotypical get treated the way they do. It sucks, it does. The only thing you can do is try hanging around a more aware, or more intellgent crowd. General trends reflect the lowest common denominator, but that's not the only one that exists.

lol "an asperger"

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
oh sit down

it's like calling someone "a hodgkin" or "a down"

it's saying that having asperger's defines her, which is wrong

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I... agree. I found it a bit problematic. Why are you telling me to sit down?

someone's reading way to much into things and applying false intent. her husband was using a descriptor most relevent to the point he was trying to make. he could have added "with blonde hair, likes comics books and has issues with her mother" but why would he?

More posts nitpicking the language of the secret than addressing the topic. This is what I can't stand about f!s. (I mean, "an asperger" sounds odd, but still!)

Near is not a real person.

HTH

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's exactly the point of my secret. If people can say things like that about a fictional character, imagine what they say about real people.

Besides, it doesn't make it any more acceptable. It's like bashing, let's say, a gay character for being homosexual. Just because it's fictional person, it doesn't make the act any less cruel. It just shows how awful people about those subjects.

...have you missed the entire point of this community?

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
All of the Wammy's are pretty tragic in their own ways. My head cannon is that Near has some form of autism and additional emotional crippling from being raised to succeed someone who can just never be replaced. And on top of that the one person he could relate to hated his guts and then died.

I almost wanted to hug him when he said that he didn't know how to book a flight.

MTE.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
MTE. To me he was always so focused on being L's replacement that he never understood (or knew that there was)a need for displaying emotions. I find that super interesting, and kind of wish I had the drive to write DN fic still. I love those three messed up boys.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think most readers would agree he has some kind of ASD.
It's just that 'emotionless robot' is how most people think of people with Asperger's.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
...I think that's kind of the OP's point?

People think like that of Near and it hurts because it reminds them that people have the same inaccurate stereotype their girlfriend and other real-life autistic people.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're taking it a bit too personally OP. (Me, I don't like Near because it should have been L who caught Light at the end, not him.)

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Eww, you sound half retarded yourself, OP.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of got the impression that Near was autistic from his behavior and disposition, although he is excellent at reading people and guessing their motives so I really don't know. To a lesser extent, I felt the same way about L.
Personally I never liked Near but that was because I liked Light and preferred L as his opponent, not so much out of dislike for the character personally.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I also thought L was autistic. And then there was this huge wank over it on tvtropes because people insisted that autistic people can't be ruthless like L was.

...being autistic myself I have to say I've experienced firsthand how ruthless we can be. And yet I mentioned that and get asked if I wasn't a misdiagnosed sociopath. What. The hell.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
TBPH I kind of bristled at the secret from all the memories of autism wank in the Death Note fandom (at some point it became taboo to even consider that L and Near might possibly, maybe be autistic).
But...what? Autistic people can't be ruthless? Boo, citation needed. Also boo x 100 to "lol armchair psychology, time to diagnose strangers on the internet from one comment!"
I still wonder because of how ridiculously good L and Near are at reading people, because that's a pretty textbook issue for people on the autism spectrum and those two characters are better at it than most neurotypical people. But maybe they received a lot of training in it at Wammy's House? IDEK.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the "robotic" criticism comes more from his absolute, almost blind devotion to Mello. Heck, "emotionless" could be derivative of that too, ignoring the times when Near has shown emotion/sympathy for those who suffer. Of course this doesn't rule him out as simply being on some part of the autism spectrum either. People don't always see subtleties in emotion. And I imagine they're difficult to portray in a 2-Dimensional medium. Although with that limitation, and their stock of stoic characters, I thought Death Note portrayed these subtleties very well. If you can't see subltety though, of course, you'll miss it.
