In my fandom, it's generally agreed upon that they're not real people. They're fictional representations, caricatures. Celebrity X said in one interview that she liked strawberry milkshakes once in a while, so in fanfic, she gets the shakes if there's not one within arms reach at all times. In real life, Celebrity Y is an actor on a popular TV show, but in fanfic, he's a dogcatcher in a small town.

We know we're not writing about real people, because we don't KNOW those real people. We only know the celebrity side that they project, which more often than not is NOT how the person actually is, so we take that projection and run with it. YES, the fictional character has the same name, and YES, he looks exactly like the celebrity, and YES all his friends and family are there, but it's not THEM.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

I'm not in any RPF fandom (there aren't any celebs I like well enough) but I have friends that like it and it's not like they think they're writing about the PERSON but the PERSONA. It's pretty much ALL fanon with some canon stuff sprinkled in.

I'm very sorry OP had to go through that because someone you know doing that is threatening because "what if it's a fantasy" but in fandom... it's not like any of the writers want any of what they write to happen. There's a remove.

It gets creepy when other people show the fic/art/whatever to the celebs. Then it gets weird because they KNOW it could bother the celeb most RPF writers don't want that to actually bother the celebs... they just want to exist with their imaginations and squee with their friends. It's no worse than having a sex dream about celeb of your choice or reading gossip sites about so and so dating so and so.

+1. I think there's a big difference between writing something about someone you don't know, will probably never meet, and don't really know that much about and sticking it on the internet where they may or may not happen upon it, and writing something about someone you know personally and telling them about it, or showing your fic to a celebrity you've written about. There's a personal detachment to RPF in most cases which makes it much less squiky (to me) than showing your RPF fic to the celebrity you've written about or writing rape fic about your friend.

Yep. Not to mention that some celebrities, such as certain idols and pop band artists, deliberately play up their public interactions to spark the fans' imagination. It's all kayfabe and all part of their appeal, and both the celebrities and the fans know it's just fantasy - sort of like the trumped-up public rivalries of pro wrestlers who are quite okay with each other behind the scenes. And some RPF is more about casting celebrities in some alternate setting story, without purporting to represent said celebrity's persona at all.

The story about OP was creepy as hell, as is presenting celebrities with unsolicited RPF that they would otherwise avoid. However, those are instances of privacy violation and extreme oversharing - especially when someone's line of fantasy gives you good reason to fear that they want to assault you. I see that as clearly different from the likes of Steampunk Mythbusters, or a public-persona-based fantasy well removed from the actual humans behind the celebrity curtain.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
it's not like they think they're writing about the PERSON but the PERSONA.

This is a completely awesome and succinct way of explaining RPF. +1 to you!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
all of this.

[identity profile] honestys-easy.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. Thank you. Juat because someone writes RPF does not mean they think what they write is actually about the person, or has happened in reality (or that the author even wants it to happen in reality). We're playing around with characters just like any other fanfiction writer.

I don't condone showing RPF to the people it mentions, especially if they've expressed their dislike of it. But, man, RPF haters, let us have our fun.

[identity profile] avatarmn.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
The fact you don't condone showing RPF to the subject even if they haven't expressed a dislike of it should tell you something.

[identity profile] honestys-easy.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It...tells me I don't want to bother them? o_O

I mean, I don't think elaborate fanworks are meant to be shown to the creators and/or subjects of any fandom. If they want to go out and seek it, that's their own deal. But I'm not going to a meet and greet and showing my Oliver/Percy fics to J.K. Rowling, and I'm not showing my fics to the real people I write. The fanworks, in any fandom, are not intended the canon itself, it's intended for the contentment of the author and the fans who wish to see/read/consume it.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
OP of the secret here -- I know that at least 4 of my favourite bands know RPF of them exists. Just because it's not intended for the "canons" doesn't mean that if it's a common thing they won't stumble upon it or hear it discussed and find it creepy.

I have pals on another forum who have stumbled on RPF about themselves and ended up changing the way they interact with fans because of it. Saying that it's not meant for them really doesn't help the matter.

[identity profile] princesoup.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
oh btw while i remember

lol i'm sorry that someone wrote such creepy shit about you that's awful

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
This is probably the best description of RPF I've ever read. This is exactly how I feel. The characters I write about are no more real than the ones in a fictional novel or a TV show; they may share the name and face of a real person, but they most certainly are not that person. It's really just original fiction with celebrity profiles attached >_>;

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Just so's you know, that sounds like utter bullshit. I'm writing this story about you, but it's not *really* you even though it's your name and looks just like you and all the characters have the same name as people in your life.

Sorry, that's still fucking creepy.
Edited 2011-07-30 06:11 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, agreed. A lot of comments up the thread talk about how the writer sees it as a persona, not a person, but for me it's about how the wider world and especially how the person being written about might see it. Even if there's a miniscule chance of them finding out, it's still... unsettling.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of popular things are creepy. Doesn't mean people should stop enjoying it.

[identity profile] honestys-easy.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
....then don't read it. YKINMK. I find fics about rape, even of characters that have never existed, extremely fucking creepy and I never want to be near a person that writes them. Do I think that they should stop writing it because I find it creepy? No.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here -- you don't think that people whom fanfic is written about should have a say in its existence? If you keep it to yourself it's not hurting anyone, but when you make explicit fantasies (and even worse manips and fake interviews) public it borders on sexual harassment.

[identity profile] princesoup.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah no that's still really fucking creepy

it's not just celebrities, it's hockey players and tennis players, singers and performers, voice actresses and news anchors, sometimes even politicians

they're not just characters or written things that don't actually exist, they're real people with real lives and real friends and those are real relationships you're manipulating

stop defending and glorifying fucking creepy fantasies with the shitty excuse of BUT EVERYONE FAMOUS EVER IS JUST PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE EVERY SECOND OF EVERY DAY OF EVERY WEEK OF EVERY MONTH OF EVERY YEAR

they might be famous and OMG some of them are fake call up the tabloids you've stumbled on something new, but they're still PEOPLE, and in case you in all your genius states of observation missed this, people you know on a personal level can be fake, too, and you admit that writing it about irl people is unacceptable...

...so why is it suddenly okay to write it about famous people? because they're famous? jesus christ if you like them and respect them as a person, which i assume you must do to want to write creepy-ass fanfiction about them, then why would you want to do something so potentially scarring?

just because you don't know them personally doesn't mean you can skirt responsibility for being a fucking stalker pro

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not just celebrities, it's hockey players and tennis players, singers and performers, voice actresses and news anchors, sometimes even politicians

Who are all celebrities. They put themselves in the spotlight and expect to have crazy-ass fans send them love letters and plaster casts of their body parts. We who quietly write stories and share them with other people who enjoy them on the internet, and don't show them to the celebrity are not near as nuts.

Your comment is laced with "creepy" and "stalker" comments so I'm sure this'll go right over your head too while you flail about "OMG HDU".

[identity profile] princesoup.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
why do you assume that i think ANY of that is acceptable?

and what about people who want to sing for a living? people who want to write? people who are only famous because they've had a dream to do something in the way of performing since they were little because they genuinely enjoy performing, or singing, or writing, or playing a sport?

do you think they deserve to have such creepy things happen to them just for doing what they've wanted to do since they were five? because lol the first thing that came to my friend's mind when she said she wanted to be a singer was GOD I CAN'T WAIT FOR ALL THE FAN LETTERS WRITTEN IN THEIR BLOOD <3

like hikasa youko is a voice actress i admire and she's wanted to be a voice actress since she first watched sailor moon because she thought it was really cool how people could sound so different while voicing people. that was her dream. she accomplished it and should be able to feel proud of herself, not creeped out because there's a fucking porno fic with her and toyosaki aki, or some weird shit

what about a florist working in a shop you've been in a few times? they're just doing their job, should they put up with it because OMG THEY'RE IN THE PUBLIC EYE THEY WORK IN A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN OBSERVE THEM, THEY SHOULD EXPECT THIS!!!1

i'm guessing you have no fucking clue how scary stalker shit can be and how it can potentially wreck a real person's life, so i'm going to pass you off as I'M TRYING TO JUSTIFY MY DISGUSTING HOBBY OF PLAYING WITH REAL PEOPLE'S LIVES and hope that nobody you admire has the misfortune of meeting you

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)

i'm guessing you have no fucking clue how scary stalker shit can be

Nor you, apparently, because last time I checked a creepy guy who follows you everywhere, calls you in the middle of the night, hurts you physically and sends you death threats =/= a random girl/boy who write fictions about YOUR PERSONA.
Btw, do you really think that celebrities are scared by their fans' fantasies? LOL, thanks for bothering but I think that the first ones to build carefully the character RPFers choose to play with are them.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't agree with the assertion that RPF is about representations or public images of celebrities. I read RPF because I want to enjoy my favorite celebrities.

However, I wish you'd learn the very basic rules of capitalizing the initial letter at the beginnings of your sentences and using periods at the ends. It's very hard to care about what you have to say when you can't bother to learn two of the most basic rules of writing.

[identity profile] princesoup.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I apologize for this most awful of transgressions that I have committed against you. I shall commit myself to a convent and donate all of my worldly goods towards charities of various descriptions in the hopes that my karmic balance will one day even itself out again, and until then, I wish you all of the best fortune as way of proving to you that I possess nothing but regret for my appalling lack of consideration for your opinion.
