Yes, rape is rape. And noncon(sensual sex) is rape, and rape is noncon. They are different terms for the same thing.

I think the point of the secret was that noncon was prettying up the word, and making it seem like different things. Like they aren't writing rape fics, but noncon. That's what it's always seemed like to me.

I have to wonder how new to net slang you have to be to think this. Almost all the boards I know where "noncon" came into vogue happened in part because there were so many wanks about how to "define" rape -- "noncon" actually is far more explanatory because it is short for "noncon(sensual sexual contact)". Noncon groping, blowjobs, vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse, everything. There can be no more explicit warning than "NONCONSENSUAL ACTS OCCURRING".

Also, now that "triggers" have come into fandom space, the word "noncon" serves an important purpose to avoid upsetting people who are triggered by merely reading the word "rape".

I just... what? Like they aren't writing rape fics, but noncon? Noncon = non consensual sexual acts. Such as rape. When people write noncon they are writing fic about non consensual acts. Such as rape. No one is "prettying" anything up, they're using a term that describes exactly what the situation is. A non consensual - or, if you will, noncon - sex act.

It's what I thought the OP was saying; that by not using the term rape that they're avoiding that that's what they're writing about. Prettying it up was a really bad way of phrasing it, I admit, but what I thought OP was trying to say was that people weren't owning up to that's what they were writing.

I guess I can agree to an extent, because I think there are definitely people who don't own up to that. Before this thread it had honestly never occurred to me that people would have a trigger to the actual word (or rather, I had never really thought of it)so now I can definitely see another reason for why you'd use non-con if the fic was really just a rape fic.
