Wow I talk a lot, pt 1
So, it's only okay to write RPF about people who are dead and can't be offended by the gangraping and mpreg? Awesome, I'll make a note of that.
I've been browsing through a lot of your comments, and it seems to me that the biggest point you're missing is this: Most people can tell the difference between fiction and reality. Odds are, if you live any sort of "normal" life and have near-daily interaction with other human beings, someone somewhere has had a fantasy about you. You just don't know it. You don't have to be famous for this to happen. Maybe it was the construction worker who whistled at you when you walked past. Maybe it was the nerdy girl in the library with the thick glasses and the Star Trek sticker on her laptop who kept glancing at you and looking away. Maybe it was Joe (or Jane) in Accounting who only sees you every once awhile in the break room, who has never said anything but thinks you're attractive. Maybe it was the complete stranger who was walking the opposite way on the sidewalk and liked the cut of your blouse. Maybe it was the girl behind the counter making your coffee and wondering what your mouth tasted like. (I tried to include both men and women being perved on in my examples ^_~)
The first point I'm trying to make here is: Fantasies exist. Once you accept that, then we can move on to YKINMK. The coffee barista might like her fantasies as vanilla as her coffee shots, but maybe Joe in Accounting prefers a few ropes and chains to make things interesting, or the construction worker likes a little dub-con. Different strokes for different folks, a.k.a. Your Kink Is Not My Kink.
Which brings me to my third point: The difference between fantasy and reality. Just because you like to read about something doesn't mean you're going to do it. Joe might get off to the idea of you tying him up, but he's probably never going to ask you to do it in real life. The construction worker might like the idea of you fighting back as he pushes a hand under your skirt, but he's never going to jump you on the street and drag you to a deserted part of the construction site.
Yes, there are nutters who can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality, and probably some of them write RPF. But don't lump everybody into that category.
Personally, I enjoy reading RPF, both fic where the actors are as close to the personalities we see in interviews, and AU where the actors have some other job in some other universe. I agree with the others that when I read RPF, it's for the personas, because I don't know these people IRL. Yes, their name and their dogs' names and their family members' names are all accounted for in the fanfic, but that doesn't mean that I would walk up to the actor in real life and assume I know anything about what his life is really like.
