Re: Wow I talk a lot, pt 2

Respectfully, I disagree.

but "fantasy =/= reality" does not equate when IN REALITY someone is obsessed enough with you to write a story about you

Yes, yes it does. That's EXACTLY when the difference between fantasy and reality comes into play. Just because you write RPF doesn't mean you're obsessed with a person, it just means that you found them interesting enough to have a plotbunny about and decided to jot that plotbunny down and share it with other like-minded people on the internet (Nobody is prying your eyes open and forcing you to read the fic). Now, if you're the type of nutter who tells the object of your fantasies that you write about them, give them fanfic, or god forbid, actually do know them in real life, then that line between reality is obviously blurred. But every RPS fic =/= obsession. Writing a story about Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles only means that I like the way they look together and I think their public personas mesh well. It doesn't mean that I'm going to fly to Vancouver and stalk him on set, send him letters made up of magazine clippings, or threaten their fucking wives because she isn't my OTP. You know why? Because (say it with me, people) FANTASY =/= REALITY. Which brings me to your second point...

but once you put them out there then you HAVE acted on them

Wow, you're kidding me, right? There's a huge world of difference between posting a fanfic and acting on your fantasy. I can't even... Are you serious? You really don't see a difference? Then man, I feel sorry for you. One of the greatest things about fantasies are the fact that it's something that wouldn't happen in real life, but it's fun to think about. So maybe I can come up with a couple plotbunnies on my own, but I have read some exquisite RPF fanfic that was beautifully written and I don't regret reading them. On the opposite spectrum, I once read some truly disturbing RPF fanfic about anal sex with a hot lava lamp. Reading or writing about hot lava lamp penetration =/= actually shoving one up someone's ass in real life. In reality I'm sure it would be fucking painful as shit and an act of plain torture, because a real person is actually experiencing it in real life. But in fantasy it's kinda disturbing but also a bit fascinating on a weird level and it makes an interesting fantasy, because it's still FICTION, despite using characters that closely resemble real people.

if the person you're writing about ever comes across it, that's practically sexual harrassment

No. No, it isn't. Sexual harassment is intimidation, bullying or coercion of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors. Writing a story about two hot people falling in love doesn't mean you want anything from the actors. If the actor themselves makes the mistake of reading fanfic about themselves and being disturbed by it, then that's their prerogative and they're entitled to their own feelings, but that doesn't mean the author was sexually harassing the actor just because they posted a fanfic.

Just curious, do you think there's a difference between, say, and rom-com RPF fic, and a dark, twisted noncon gangrape RPF fic? Or do you consider them both the same level of creepy stalkery weirdness?

then make your own bloody character with a personality similar to theirs, not play with the people themselves like - as another poster said - dolls in a dollhouse

not every celebrity is faking a persona 100% of the time with no rest, so you can't even use that as an excuse just because you want to publicly display your urge to see this jensen person and this jared person fuck like rabbits on viagra

There's a huge world of difference between posting a fanfic and acting on your fantasy.

wow you fucking idiot

the point

your head

you have a fantasy

that's fine, they happen, you're not doing anything about it, it's not hurting anyone, you're the only one that knows about it

but once you think, "hey, wouldn't it be cool to bring this fantasy out of my imagination and into the real world?" you're recognizing your fantasy and putting it out there, actively taking effort to take your fantasy beyond the realms of fantasies in your head and into the real actual world, therefore making a concious decision to act on it

you're NOT acting your fantasy out, but you're acting on your fantasy by writing it as a story, because you're taking that fantasy and DOING something about it

No, it isn't.

step 1: find a dictionary
step 2: look up "practically"
step 3: ???
step 4: enlightenment!

then make your own bloody character with a personality similar to theirs

Exactly where do you draw the line on "similar to theirs"? So you think it's wrong to write a story about tall, brown-haired Jared Padalecki and his boyfriend, hazel-eyed Jensen Ackles and their dogs Harley and Sadie, but it's a-okay to write a story about tall, brown-haired Joshua Prudaka and his boyfriend, hazel-eyed Jonah Beckles and their dogs Hardison and Sylvia? That's even fucking creepier than writing RPF, because at least with RPF you're honestly admitting that you fancy these people. If you make up a character who is too damn similar to the actor's persona, then you're just faking it and the only person you're deluding is yourself, pretending that you're not some nasty RPF writer. Exactly how many things do you have to change about the persona before it's not obvious that you're writing RPF? And if it's too different, then you just missed the point entirely. If I wanted to write a story about someone else, I'd write it about someone else. But no, I want to write a story about Jared Padalecki who has two dogs and is tall with a goofy smile, who eats too much candy and lets his Texas accent slip when he's drunk, who likes to wear pink and is hyper enough to tire out a dozen energetic puppies. It's that character that I like to read about, that character that I like to explore and play with.

so you can't even use that as an excuse just because you want to publicly display your urge to see this jensen person and this jared person fuck like rabbits on viagra

Contrary to popular belief, it's not all about teh sex. 70% of fic I read start before the characters get together, and either end before the sex begins, or tends to use the wafting-curtans-fade-to-black approach to sex scenes. And most of the fic that has sex scenes? I scroll right through the scenes because it's the characters I love, watching one pine for another in secret, watching them interact and fall in love, that's what pushes my buttons. There's only so much insert-dick-A-into-hole-B that you can read before it all blurs into more of the same. It's how their personalities mesh and how they realize their feelings for each other that makes it interesting and fun to read.

you're NOT acting your fantasy out, but you're acting on your fantasy by writing it as a story, because you're taking that fantasy and DOING something about it

It still cracks me up that you don't see the difference. No, you're not doing anything about it. Sitting behind a computer and posting fic is just talk. Doing requires more than sitting on your ass and pressing a few keys. Fanfiction is all just words, just talk, and it's not intended for the actors that are portrayed in it. Acting on your fantasy requires actual effort to recreate your fantasy in reality, doing something to actively gain the attention of the object of your fantasies, not just passively posting fic in the vague hopes that one day the actor (musician, writer, whatever) will "stumble over it".

prac·ti·cal·ly
adv \ˈprak-ti-k(ə-)lē\
Definition of PRACTICALLY
1: in a practical manner - "look practically at the problem"
2: almost, nearly - "practically everyone"

Writing a story in no way is almost or nearly like intimidation, bullying or coercion of a sexual nature, or promising rewards in exchange for sexual favors. How about you crack a dictionary before you start sounding like an idiot?

Oh, wait. Too late.

No, you're not doing anything about it.

you're writing fanfic about it

writing is a verb

a verb is a "doing word"

fucking idiot

Re: Wow I talk a lot

*cracks up laughing* Oh, look, the idiots are coming out of the woodwork.

If you want to play the "Let's Get Technical" game, then 'thinking' and 'fantasizing' are verbs too, but even [livejournal.com profile] princesoup agrees that merely fantasizing about an actor is, and I quote, "not doing anything about it". So go call them an idiot too if you wanna ride your high horse.

In the context of this discussion, however, "doing" is being defined as "actively taking effort to take your fantasy beyond the realms of fantasies in your head and into the real actual world, therefore making a concious decision to act on it" - also a quote from [livejournal.com profile] princesoup - to which I am arguing that writing fanfiction does not equal "acting on a fantasy", as it has nothing to do with any effort to actively gain the attention of the object of the fantasies.

However, due to the eloquence of your original reply, this is probably a perfectly coherent explanation wasted on an inferior mind that was presumably not blessed with an overabundance of schooling. Good luck in any future endeavors, and try not to be such a fucking idiot yourself.
