SGU secret! Kind of wish I still had my SGU icon.

I get what you're saying. Actually, I think SGU might have benefitted from not trying to cling to the apron-strings of the previous series with the communication stones and instead and instead gone ahead and made them truly cut off from Earth. I think the tone might have been easier to swallow that way.

I mean, I never disliked the series (but I cut cable before season 2, so maybe I missed big reasons to hate beyond the standard "It's SO DIFFERENT! I want Atlantis!!!!" crying), and appreciated the stories the stones allowed them to tell...but I think there was probably room for improvement.

I agree about the communication-stones. They should have never had them, or at least not until way later in the series. It completely ruined the feeling of them being stranded and all alone somewhere unknown with no way to contact Earth.

Aww, now I feel a little bad about never giving SGU a chance. IMO SGA was at its best back when they were still completely cut off from Earth. And I usually like dystopian settings. But idk if it's worth putting my time and energy into a series that might only give me back rage and disappointment.

This. After the way they ended SGA, and, well, the entirety of season five, I had no intention of giving the writers/producers/etc another chance, even though the darker tone of SGU appealed to me. And to this day I wish Atlantis had stayed cut off from Earth. Those were the best times on the show.

I... do not much like SG-1 or SGA (I admit it, the light silliness of those two doesn't agree with me so much), but I love SGU purely because of the dystopian feel of it though I can't say I see it in a crapsack future sort of way. Just a sort of science fiction typical cut-off-and-in-a-piece-of-shit-ship way.

As the above comments have said, I agree about the silly communication stones. They were interesting enough once or twice, but it did kill the cut-off feeling. I felt the heavy emphasis on "YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT SAYS" was really tedious given how FAR they are from earth and the stones were kind of what caused that.

It put a downer on it, but I love it anyway.

I think I might have read one dystopian SGA fic too many to buy it. And I think that SGU had potentional (good actors) to deliver on its premise...but it didn't. Which is too bad since now it's franchise killer (goodbye movies). Oh well. Let's hope there will be attempt to revive the franchise few years down the road.

PRODUCERS KILLED IT. :x

I watched it all, but really only for the train-wreck value. I couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters.

My personal theory for the show's conception is a producer looking at how well BSG was received by Stargate fans (though I don't actually know if it really was, all I know is that I love them both), and going "hmmm ... What happens when we strand some characters from the Stargate program in a BSG-like setting?" XP

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's interesting. I haven't actually met many BSG fans in SG fandom. I count the popularity by crossovers and there's not many of them :D

But yeah, it was obvious that they were heavily inspired by BSG.

I just rewatched 200 episode of SG-1 and then watched first few episodes of SGU and was like "Are you serious?".

[identity profile] omg-wtf-yeah.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm into SGA and BSG. I thought SGU sounded like a cool concept but the characters didn't hold my interest. It was kinda soapy.

Horrible characters, horrible writing, mostly horrible acting. Shouldn't even be associated with Stargate.

My hate, it burns still!
