Lily and Hermione weren't alike. I don't get where people get this idea from. Lily was said to be feisty, funny, vivacious, and she wasn't top of her class (James and Sirius were). She wasn't bookish like Hermione (at least, we have no reason to believe this). She seemed pretty adventurous, from what we got in The Prince's Tale, and one would think she'd have to be to marry someone like James. Between Ginny and Hermione I'd say Lily was far more like Ginny, from what we know. Even JKR has made that connection, when she said that Lily was pretty and well-liked.

I don't think Harry/Ginny is a copy of James/Lily but I do think there are a lot of parallels, and I think it was deliberate. I would have to say, though, that Ginny was more like James, and Harry was more like Lily. In any case, I like both couples, though I'm far more of a James/Lily shipper. :)
